Hi I'm Esben

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married and a father of 4 children. I teach and do research in psychology at a university. I also have a very small private practice where I try to help people as a clinical psychologist. While there are always challenging days and work can get very busy, for the most part I wake up thinking that I have the best job in the world. Nothing is more fascinating than people -and to think that I get paid to study people and then to listen to and help people is amazing. I also really enjoy travelling and seeing new places. Not only are people fascinating, but so is the world. It is big and there is a lot to see, but I hope that I will get to see a bit of it before my time on this world is finished. Another love of mine is good food. I am constantly amazed at how many great flavours there are in the world. However without a doubt my favourite thing to do is to hang out with my family. My kids are hilarious and a lot of fun. They are also very clever. My 9 year old son can already beat me in chess! My wife is the best friend that I have ever had. Best decision I ever made was getting married and having kids.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church when I was 21 years old. I was just coming out of a phase of my life where everything centred around having fun. I was starting to get a little dissatisfied with living the lifestyle of a typical undergraduate university student in the 1980s. I was starting to search for meaning, and looking for answers about the purpose of life. I was introduced to some Mormon missionaries. At first I didn't take them too seriously, but to my surprise the answers they gave to my questions rang true to me. The more that I listened, the more something that had been sleeping in side of me started to wake. Being a little cynical by nature I was cautious. However the missionaries encouraged me to pray about what the right thing to do was, and the experiences I had left me no doubt that there was a God and that it was right for me to join the church. Since then I continue to have these same experiences so I continue to go to church.

How I live my faith

While I am not perfect at it, I try to be kind and help people. I try to do this in many different areas of my life, but I think that the most important way I live my faith is that I try to be kind to my family and to teach my children to live good principles. Apart from going to church on Sundays, every Monday evening my wife and I hold a family activity where we teach Christian principles to our children. We also read the scriptures as a family every morning and talk about how we can better live these principles in our lives. We all still make lots of mistakes, but hopefully slowly over time we are all getting a just a little better at living these principles together as a family.
