Hi I'm Dave

I'm a husband, dad, granpa and an Air Force Veteran. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I enjoy life! I've always read good books and enjoy educational and entertaining TV programs. I still enjoy building model airplanes and am a frustrated pilot. Gardening is a regular passtime during the summer. I have a 30+ year-old car that is a continual restoration project. I just replaced my 30-year-old bicycle with a new one-likely my last one. I'll ride it this summer in two charity bike rides. I enjoy activities with our adult children and our grandchildren. Life is good!

Why I am a Mormon

In my youth my Protestant parents raised us to respect God, but we did not actively participate in any religious activities. A friend of several years introduced me to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. How grateful I am for that introduction! My life improved beyond any thing I could have expected. Raising a family can be very challenging; the principles inherent in Mormonism helped my wife and me face that rewarding activity. Our children benefited from a solid foundation for life. Now, in our Golden Years we continue to actively benefit from the teachings of the Savior.

How I live my faith

I teach a class of teen agers. After I get their attention (sometimes a real challenge...) I enjoy sharing with them stories and lessons about the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Last year we studied the Old Testament; this year the New Testament. In other years we discuss the teachings within the Book of Mormon and modern-day scriptures. All of these texts have a common element: how do the teachings and lives of prophets, now and then, help us cope with challenges and problems today. I have faith in these youth. They "get it".

What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

I love the scriptures! All my life I have enjoyed listening to and reading Bible stories. I am grateful for all who, through the centuries, sacrificed to preserve that wonderful collection of inspiring teachings. Now, in addition to the treasures in the Holy Bible, we have additional scripture in the Book of Mormon, an additional testament of the Lord Jesus Christ. And, thanks to modern prophets, we have even more of His teachings in the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. Together they provide a rich source of guidance for the good life. What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Suday is a special day for us. We strive to avoid daily distractions that might interfere with resting and worshipping on Sunday. We have nice chapels where we attend church services. There we participate in a group meeting with all ages and visitors welcome. We also have classes for each age group and separate classes for men and women. We have attended those services all over the world and appreciate that the same wonderful sermons and lessons are provided in the United States, in Europe, and in the South Pacific - all offered by lay members. We pay tithes and offerings by a private system, so no plate is ever passed during Church services. It's so refreshing to be with friends and neighbors in these great services! Show more Show less
