Hi I'm Doug

I love photography, I'm a physician, my family is the center of my life, and I'm Mormon.

About Me

I am a pediatric neurologist. I take care of children with brain problems like epilepsy, developmental delays, headaches, and many other problems. I am also a teacher. I spend much of my time teaching medical students and other doctors that are training. I love to think about how people learn. I enjoy my job the most when I am able to help other people, whether that is patients or students, see the world in a new way. This drive to see the world in a new way has also lead me to photography. I started by wanting to take better pictures of my kids, but as I learned more I became more and more interested in the art of photography. Photography is about learning to see. I love looking at the world around me and the people around me and thinking about how to capture those moments in pictures. I still take a lot of pictures of my kids. My family is the most important part of my life. With all the pressures and challenges that life brings I do my best to make sure that I have time for my wife and my children. I am happiest when I am with them.

Why I am a Mormon

When you compose a photograph you have to bring order to chaos. A photographer has to look through a lens and use the frame of the camera to determine what is important and what is worth looking at. In many ways, the teachings of Jesus Christ and his prophets have served the same function for me as the lens of a camera. The teachings of the Savior help me to see what is important in life. I am able to see myself more clearly and understand what type of person, husband, and father that I should be. I am able to see my relationships more clearly. I am able to identify what brings happiness to me and my family and what threatens that happiness. When I think about everything in my life that brings me happiness it is all based on the teachings of Jesus Christ as restored through His modern prophets. I want to be sure that my children have that same happiness. Perhaps the most important teaching of our church is that God gives direct answers to our prayers. He will speak directly to each one of us, his children. It is through those answers that come to our hearts that I know that God lives, that Jesus is His son, and that He has restored his church on this earth to bless our lives.

How I live my faith

The greatest lesson that I have learned is the value of each person as a child of God. I try to apply that by focusing on my children and wife as individuals of immense worth. I try to do whatever I can to help them to reach their highest potential. In the work that I do in our church, I try to apply that same principle. Even though the church is a large organization, it is made up of individuals. Each person has their own needs and their own journey. I am currently serving in a leadership position in the church. While I have many responsibilities over administrative aspects of our congregation, I try to direct my attention to the individual people that I serve. I try to visit people in their homes on a weekly basis to help them in any way that I can. I want them to know that some one cares about them. I hope that in some way I can bring a little bit of the love of their Heavenly Father into their lives.
