Hi I'm Dey

Born in Guatemala. Live in Canada. Four cultures in one person and best of all... I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to learn about anything and everything that will make me a better person. I have a fairly large family that is spread out the USA, Canada, Guatemala....and even a cousin doing missionary work in India. I enjoy my career in which I help get people completely out of debt and coach them to make better decisions with their money. I also really enjoy breakdancing and teaching about its culture. When I was young I wanted to be a professional wrestler.

Why I am a Mormon

I have always had a belief in God. I was not brought up in a very religious family but a belief in God was always something I was encouraged to have. I grew up in what many would call "The Hood" in Toronto. I saw my mom sacrifice a lot for us to have what we had and I always knew God was taking care of us. I wasn't a bad kid growing up. I made mistakes, we all do. But once I got to my teen years, I became a bit rebellious. I wanted to do what I wanted to do. 1993 is when the missionaries showed up at my house. My mom invited them in, she pulled me out of my room away from my video games to come and listen. I was really upset that she'd taken me away from my video games. The elders shared a principle that has stuck with me to this day: The Word of Wisdom, which basically states that members of the Church do not smoke, drink or do harmful drugs. I thought that was incredible and took that belief with me into my adulthood. Although I rarely, if ever, went to Church. 2001 is when my world changed. It was shortly after 9/11 and I really started to evaluate where I was in my life. I knew that I needed to have a spiritual me. I remembered these missionaries and decided one day that I would go check the Church out. I figured, if it's NOT true, I just lost 3 hours of my time. If it IS true, I have gained everything! I had many questions. Why did God allow for 9/11 to happen? How could He? I remember asking some friends but they didn't know how to answer it. While at church, the bishop invited me to read the scriptures, specifically The Book of Mormon. I skimmed through it and found a passage that when I read it, it brought tremendous peace and comfort to my heart. I knew then that I had something special. That book has changed my life and is the best self help book I have ever read! And though I have been patronized for being a member of the Church and it is difficult to live, it is true.

How I live my faith

I attend Church every Sunday. I strive to listen and learn from many people's experiences. I have learned that by taking a notebook to Church with me, I have learned to internalize what I hear. If I took notes at school so that I could become a better student, then why not at Church. Prayer is something that has helped strengthen me through the most trying times in my life. I believe prayer is what kept my family strong while my sister faced Leukemia. I believe in miracles and like to live my life believing that every day I can perhaps be a miracle for someone. I also know that sharing what I know is an important part of who I am, so often times I will let people know that I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
