Hi I'm Dale Porter

I'm married, a father of two and am currently working on a PhD in Construction Management. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I’ve been married for twenty years this summer. My wife and I spent nearly half of our time together working in Germany and traveling throughout Europe. We both were employed by the U.S. Army as civilians, and my job allowed me to take soldiers on all sorts of outdoor adventures. I am an avid cyclist and enjoy long tours. I also like rock climbing, skiing, swimming and running. I’m currently working on a PhD. in Construction Management and I teach classes within that department. My favorite pastime is spending time with my wife and kids and watching them have their own adventures and experiences.

Why I am a Mormon

People who enjoy a basic education will eventually come to the conclusion that there is a creator God. Logic dictates that there is no other coherent explanation for the existence of this highly planned, engineered and adaptable planet and infinitely accurate solar system. It is the following question that separates Deism from Theism: Why are we here? Available scripture teaches us that we are the children of that creator God and that we chose to come here, obtain a physical body in order to learn how to become more like Him and return to his presence. This process would not be possible without the atoning sacrifice of someone better than us; in fact it requires the willing sacrifice of deity. Jesus Christ atoned for our imperfections and sins. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is his proclaimed church upon the earth, and we owe him our eternal lives. Study, prayer, faith and action will eventually provide the witness of the Holy Ghost to truthfulness of this Devine plan. Patience with myself and a willingness to change has brought me to the knowledge that Christ lives, his Church has been restored and that my life has great purpose. Other explanations of our existence and God’s purposes’ when studied to their fruition eventually ring hollow. Everything positive that has ever happened in my life can be attributed to Christ’s true Church and my willing membership within that blessed organization.

How I live my faith

Thankfully Jesus Christ has restored his Church upon the face of the earth, and additionally has ordained Prophets to guide us and give us council. I admit that I am a selfish person by nature. I enjoy eating, goofing off, sleeping and reading books that at best provide entertainment and no other redeeming qualities. However, there have been early mornings when I listen to the requests of my Priesthood leaders and pulled myself out of bed, drove to the Church farms and joined hundreds of my fellow brothers and sisters pulling weeds amongst the corn and beans. I’ve squinted against the early morning sun in order to gaze down long rows vegetables to see my children labor for the benefit of people they will never meet. On those mornings I understand the joy of service and the purpose of our lives. Whether I’m serving my fellow church members or other people in my community, I understand that sacrifice brings blessings. Sometimes the greatest blessing is the simple knowledge that service to our fellow man is what will truly make us happy, and all the other worries that intrude upon our lives are just unimportant fluff.
