Hi I'm Barbarr-a

I am Australian Aboriginal, a Yuwaalaraay Woman. I was born in Brisbane. I live in Deception Bay, Queensland, Australia.

About Me

I was born during World War 11. I am an Senior Aboriginal Elder, I have lived in my area since I was 5 years old apart from a few years in another State and a few months Overseas. I have 10 children, 7 girls and 3 boys; 33 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren with another little boy due in a months time. I love searching out my Ancestors, I would have to say that Family History is very fullfilling and have served a Family History mission until my health started to decline. When I was nearly 60 I went back to school, I gained a Dipolma of Indigenous Community Welfare, I then went on to University and studied by distance education, I gained my Bachelor of Health Secience/Mental Health. I then attended another University and gained my Masters of Indigenous Studies, I also have my Cert 1V in Assessment & Training in Workplace Health & Safety. I work in Community and am on quite a few Corporations, I am an Assistant Direct of a Family History Centre. My mother always said to me when I had been teased, "Barbaraa-a you are who you are, You always will be who you are. Be proud of who you are and Do the best with who you are. My Mother was an honest woman full of love and wisdom and compassion, she taught us these qualities. Sometimes we would have nothing to eat ,she with full confidence would say "The Lord will provide, you do your part He will do His". She taught us to treat others as we would like to be treated. I was truly blessed to have her for my Mother.

Why I am a Mormon

I am the only member of my family to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, my siblings and parents did not join. Let me tell you of my conversion. The Elders boarded with my Aunt and Uncle and family, when they first came to the Peninsula, this is how I met them, I was 13 years old. I was given a copy of the Book of Mormon, it was the first Book I ever owned, I held it close to my chest and could feel that this Book was going to change my life. I took the discussions and read that Book and knew that it was true, I wanted to join the Church., but my Father said I was too young and I would just have to wait until I was older, I then went to my Aunty & Pops to live, she was really my cousin but was very old so we called her our Aunty. I had a job in town and to my surprise Pop and Aunty had joined the Church and so I was able to attend and learn more about the Gospel. I was nearly 16 when I asked my dad once more if I could join the church, I could not join without his permission and to my surprise he said yes, I was baptised as soon as arrangements could be arranged. The Church has taught me so much, it has answered my questions that others could not. I know the Gospel is true, I know that Christ lives, that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God and that he translated the Book of Mormon with the help of the Lord. I know that we have present day Prophets to guide us. After my marriage I was inactive for a while, but I never denied the truthfulness of the Gospel and have done my best to live by the Principles that the Lord would have us live by. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints is Christs Church, and I thank him for the day that I met the Elders and they gave me the most important book I have ever held. I did not realise then what a priceless jewel I held in my hands and didn't until many years latter. The Gospel has enhanced my life in so many ways, it has guided me. I am thankful for my membership.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by working in and for my community in many different areas. since I have been a member of the Church I have worked in our Family History Centre for many many years and I still enjoy helping others find their ancestors and showing them how to use the different programs and how to research to find them or how to set up their books...My husband & I were Young Single Adult Advisors at one time. I have also worked in Public Affairs in 2 States,I have been in Childrens Sunday School in leadership positions, music & teaching. I have also taught the youth, I have been in leadership positions with the women's group, taught lessons & organised a fair. We used to hold stores down town in the 1960's selling food, clothing & items to raise money so we could obtain a Chapel. Visiting teaching is a very important thing to do, it is where 2 of us go out together to visit a few sister each month. We help them or organise help for them if they need it. We discuss the many different aspects of life, the hills we climb and the joy of being refinded after we have reached our goal and learnt the lesson that we needed to learn. I live my faith by trying to be what the Lord would want me to be, everyday I strive to become more like Him, and I am so thankful that He is forgiving if we make a mistakes and have to start again, as being human has hard time in it. I love to attend the Temple to learn more of what I need to, if I am ill and cannot attend I feel such a loss. Attending the Temple is rejuvinating oneself to take on the challenges of the week to come, we all need to sit still and listen and learn. I love to see the smile on others faces when you help them. I thank the Lord for the World an all the beautiful things he created in it, the birds singing in the morning, the wind blowing through the leaves, the waves gently rolling. I am so thankful to be on this earth at this time. I am thankful for living for the Lord. Amen

Can husband and wife be together forever? Do you believe that families will live together in heaven?

Barbarr-a
Yes husbands and wives can be together forever, we need to be married in the Temple and keep our Covenants for this to happen. Yes I believe that families can be together forever too, that is how the Lord planned it, once again we need to be sealed together in the Temple and keep othe Covenants we have made, if we do this we will be together forever, nothing can separate us not even death. The Lords plan of happiness is a wonderful plan it gives us the chance to still be families beyond the grave. I am so thankful we have a just God. Show more Show less
