Hi I'm Eckhard Hensel

I'm a Mormon. I grew up in the divided city of Berlin. I live in Lübeck, Germany.

About Me

I am married and have 6 grown children. I have been a professional genealogist for the last 22 years, specializing in German genealogy research. I love my work as it brings new challenges every day. We are living at the beautiful Baltic Sea in Holstein.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 18. When I was about 14 years old I prayed to God to know if the Bible was his word. I received a witness of the spirit of God that it is his word indeed. It was a sure witness, confirmed by a burning in the bosom. With that I also knew that God lives, that he answers our prayers, and that he knows and cares about each one of us. After that my interest in religion in general grew. I was active in the Lutheran church youth program. I started to investigate many different Christian churches. When I was 18, two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knocked on our door. I was the only one in the family that was interested in listening to what they had to say. Among other things they told me of the Book of Mormon, testified that it was the word of God, that it was an old holy scripture written by Prophets on the American continent. They also challenged me to read it and find out for myself through prayer if this was true. I thought, wait a minute, 4 years a ago I received a witness that the Bible was the word of God, and I had learned this through prayer and revelation from God. Now these men tell me that there is more of the word of God and that I can find out by praying. Since I already knew by my previous experience how to get an answer from God, it was relatively easy for me to find out. That same night, I read about 50 pages of the Book of Mormon. Then I started to pray. I poured out my heart before God and told him I wanted to know if the Book of Mormon was of Him. That same night I received a strong burning in the bosom and an overwhelming conviction that this book was indeed holy scripture, written by inspiration from God by holy prophets. At the same time I knew that the Church of Jesus Christ had indeed been restored on the earth. After that experience there was no room for doubt that I had found the truth, and I soon after joined the true church.

How I live my faith

Soon after I joined the church it was my greatest desire to share my conviction with others. I was called to be a full time missionary for 2 years in England. After that I had many callings in the church. I was a teacher in Priesthood and Sunday School, quorum president in the priesthood, councelor in the branch presidency. For the longest time I was also active in helping others do their genealogy research, as an advisor, and also as a director in one of the branch Family History Centers. It is my greatest joy to be active in the church, thereby helping my fellow men and myself to come closer to God and reaching our full potential as sons and daughters of God.
