Hi I'm Tom

I'm a first generation member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

About Me

I am married, have 5 children 3 girls and 2 boys, and 18 grandchildren 12 boys and 6 girls. I worked as a papermaker for 27years, followed by 15 years in the radiological equipment field. I have served in several leadership positions in the community, church, military and at work, and enjoy creating systems that help people achieve. I like to bike, travel, and anything that keeps me active.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by conversion as a young married adult and have remained an active member because of my faith in Jesus Christ and his Gospel. My wife and I joined the church in our early 20's. We had both been active members of other christian denominations, and were the first of our family to join the church. We lived in a small community in western North Carolina with 1 year old twins when a new member neighbor began to friendship my wife and shortly, invited us to a dinner which included the Missionaries. We agreed to a 1st discussion with the Missionaries and accepted a Joseph Smith pamphlet. My first reaction to the Joseph Smith story was disbelief, but we continued discussions, and accepted a challenge to search and pray about the things they taught. We accepted a challenge to be baptized contingent on our prayers being answered. At the conclusion of the discussions, we declined the baptismal invitation because we felt our prayers had not been answered. When challenged to pray one more time, we retired to our bedroom where I asked if there could ever have been a Prophet by the name of Joseph Smith. The answer was so powerful in the affirmative that we consented to join the church on the originally scheduled date. I understand that it doesn't happen that way for everyone, but how I felt after my prayer was answered is as clear to my emotions as the day it happened. I knew then and I know now that Brother Joseph was the Prophet of the restoration, and that initial spark of testamony has drawn me closer to my Father in Heaven and his son Jesus Christ and their Gospel. I have come to know the truth of many things thru the promptings of the Holy Spirit since that special day in North Carolina. I love the neighbors who fellowshipped us and the Missionaries who taught us for helping , but revelation from the Holy Spirit is the reason I believe.

How I live my faith

I have attempted to live my faith thru doing my best to live the principles found in the Gospel, and by service to our fathers other children. While I have fallen woefully short on many occasions I think that trying to do the right thing has been at the core of anything I could call success. Following the admonitions of family, friends, and church leaders has helped me a great deal, and following the promptings of the Holy Spirit when I have been worthy and willing to get them has been the most sure road to joy, but not always the easiest route. I have served in many callings in the church, but have found myself most frequently either doing missionary work, or working with the Youth. I have been a teacher, scoutmaster, youth group leader at several levels and enjoy being around and watching the progression of young folks. Currently I am an assistant to one of the organizations which support our young men, and my wife and I are preparing to serve a full time mission.
