Hi I'm Derek

I like music, I like learning, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a university student who loves making music, everything Russian, utilizing technology and exploring the outdoors. I find joy in life's simple gifts like a view of the rising sun's fight through a misty dawn, riveting conversation or a spoonful of nutella, and I'm always excited to learn something new.

Why I am a Mormon

Throughout my life, I have come across examples of those who are truly happy - who had loving marriages, strong families, fulfillment in their talents, and a contagiously positive attitude, regardless of their background or challenges. I knew that this was tied to their understanding of God, their Father in Heaven, and of His Son, Jesus Christ, and I wanted to know what they knew and have the same anchor that they had. I studied scripture every day - the Bible and the Book of Mormon - and was frustrated that even after spending so much time looking and asking, I could never seem to understand or feel what these other people could. This general feeling continued for several years, until one day, reading the words of a prophet in the Book of Mormon, I knew without any doubt that Jesus Christ knew me, loved me, and was the Savior of all people - exactly who he said he was. I had been been making an effort for a long time keep God's commandments and repent of my sins, but now I finally felt the enabling, lifting power of the atonement of Jesus Christ in a very real way. Though outwardly I continued to try to follow the Savior as before, the change of heart that took place in my life after that moment was indescribable. My motivation was completely different; my perception of other people was enlightened; my love toward my heavenly family was cemented, and I experienced a joy and gratitude that I had not been able to fathom before I received that great gift. I felt Jesus Christ had actually changed me, and I knew he would always be there. I finally found what I was looking for, and now, I am hoping and praying that that understanding will continue to develop.

How I live my faith

I recently returned from a two year mission to teach the message of Jesus Christ in Belarus and western Russia. I saw hearts changed in the way mine was, I saw miracles occur, and I felt and witnessed the great love of God the Father for His children. The most significant ways I live my faith, however, are much simpler. It's offering to give time and work for other people. It's listening to and learning from others. It's studying the words God has given us to help us be happy and applying them in daily life. It's looking for opportunities to be of service and lift others and staring each day with an attitude of spreading the message of Jesus Christ in everything thought and deed. Some days are harder than other, and I am far from perfect, but I know that if we desire it, Jesus Christ can gradually but surely teach us to become patient, hopeful, humble, active, and above all, full of love toward all people as He is. These are things I would like to emulate better each day as I learn about and try to live according to the example of the Savior.
