Hi I'm Shane

I'm an economist. I love college football. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a grad student in economics with the hope of becoming a college professor. Economics interests me because it attempts to predict and explain something that is inherently unpredictable: human behavior. I also really enjoy sports, especially college football. An autumn Saturday morning, with a full slate of college football games ahead of me, is like Christmas. Ultimately, my true passion in life is being a husband and father. We have a blast with each other, and we try to do everything we can together. Even the routine things in life (trips to the grocery store, standing in line at the DMV, eating leftovers) are happy occasions when you're with people you absolutely love.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon for very simple reasons. Trying to live a Christ-centered life brings happiness in day-to-day activities, but also provides a fulfilling long-term perspective. The peace that comes from following Christ, even in the darkest storms of life, is completely unparalleled. I believe that God wants us to involve Him frequently (always) in our lives. He is greatly concerned about our well-being and happiness, and wants to help us make good decisions. The Mormon Church really encourages members and nonmembers alike to ask God about which course we should take in our lives. There is incredible personal freedom in this process, and it ultimately leads to greater faith in God and His power to answer our petitions for guidance and help. Indeed, it is because I asked God what I should do that I'm a Mormon today. There is great happiness in this church, and great opportunities for spiritual growth. But beyond the Church's ability to make me a happier, more fulfilled person, I am a Mormon because I believe it is God's true church.

How I live my faith

My main responsibility at church is helping new members and those investigating the church learn the fundamentals of the Church of Jesus Christ. I try to help new and soon-to-be members feel comfortable at church, and help them understand that they are surrounded by a church family that loves and values them. I also try and organize events that help the general community become more aware of Mormon beliefs and practices. I really enjoy building on the common ground that we share with other faiths.
