Hi I'm Tom

I have lived in California, Arizona, Utah and Japan. I'm a lawyer, businessman, and entrepreneur. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a father with 3 kids (1 boy and 2 girls) all of whom are now full grown. I currently have 4 grandchildren evenly split with 2 boys and 2 girls. My wife and I have been married for over 30 years. I like to build cabinets and furniture, and have remodeled virtually every room in our house. I enjoy the creative process. I also like scuba diving and photography. I have recently combined the two hobbies and have taken a lot of underwater photos. On occasion I like to go hiking, backpacking and camping.

Why I am a Mormon

I love the gospel of Jesus Christ. I love the fact that I do not have to take anyone else's word for whether or not the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true. I have the right and the ability to study the scriptures, ponder and pray and receive my own personal witness that the gospel is true. I have done that--repeatedly. And I have received a spiritual witness through the Holy Ghost that 1) Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, 2) that he was called by God to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ in its fulness to the earth, along with the necessary priesthood authority to administer Christ's church here on the earth and officiate the saving ordinances like baptism, 3) that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of the world, and that He came into the world to atone for our sins and enable all of us to be resurrected someday, and, provided we repent, to become joint-heirs with Christ of all the blessings that our Father in Heaven has in store for us, 4) that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the restored Church that Christ established during and after His mortal ministry, and 5) that we continue to be led today by living prophets who receive revelation and guidance specific to our needs today. Knowing the gospel and our Heavenly Father's Plan for our Happiness and Salvation has brought me tremendous joy. It has helped me become a better husband, father and grandfather--a better person. It helps me want to become a better person than I am today.

How I live my faith

I am now partially retired. As a result, I have some free time. Although I am often tempted to use my available time in selfish pursuits like going scuba diving, I feel that it is important to learn to be unselfish and serve others. Ironically, I have found that when I do set aside my selfish desires and spend my time serving others, I gain the greatest sense of happiness and joy. I want to show my Father in Heaven my gratitude for the many blessings He has given me, by helping to make the world a better place. Last year my wife and I were able to go on a mission to the Nauvoo, Illinois Temple for 6 months. It was an amazing experience that helped me feel connected to my pioneer ancestors. It also made me feel very humble to learn more about the incredible faith and faithfulness of the early Mormon pioneers, whose sacrifices made it possible for us to enjoy so many of our blessings today. I currently spend about 30 hours a week doing Church service. Part of that Church service involves working closely with the full-time missionaries in our area to teach the gospel. Another significant part involves working in the Temple that is near our home. This sounds like a lot of time--and it is--but I am so grateful that I have these opportunities to serve. Not only do I learn and grow through the work that I get to do in the Church, but I feel that my life has both meaning and purpose. I look forward to future opportunities to serve in other areas in the Church.
