Hi I'm Yoko.

I'm a piano teacher and I was born and raised in Japan. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hi, I’m Yoko and I was born and raised in Japan. I moved to America when I was married to my husband 29 years ago. We have 5 children, 1 girl and 4 boys. I became a US citizen 6 years ago. Both Japan and America are very special countries to me. I love my native country Japan, the people, the food, and the culture; but I also love America. America is big, and the people of America have big hearts and lots of friendly smiles. I am also a piano teacher and have been teaching for almost 20 years. Music is a big part of our family. There isn’t a day that passes that you don’t hear piano sounds coming from our house. Sometimes you hear two pianos going at the same time. It’s crazy, but I love listening to my children play the piano. I’m a Mormon.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church 30 years ago in Japan. I was working part-time at a bakery and was also going to college. I became good friends with a girl that was also working at the bakery. I was so impressed with how she treated people with such respect and kindness. She was a person of great integrity. Later I found out why she was like that, because we are all children of God and not even one soul should be ignored or wasted. When I found out that she was a Mormon, I decided to go to church with her. Because I attended a Catholic high school, I knew somewhat about Christianity, stories from the Bible, and the teachings of Christ. I decided to take the missionary discussions with the full-time missionaries and my friend. A couple of months later I was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I deeply believe that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, and that God speaks to us in modern days. Christ’s example shows us how to live our lives and be happy. Later on I became good friends with one of the missionaries that baptized me and kept writing letters back and forth after his mission was over and he returned to America. We were married a year later. I then moved to America. It was definitely not an easy journey to come to America and live in a different culture and language, but the Lord has blessed me with a good husband, good family, and good friends. He gave me opportunities to grow. The word “gospel” means “sounds of happiness” in Japanese. The gospel of Jesus Christ has definitely brought happiness into my life.

How I live my faith

Jesus Christ shows me how to live my life. He is the greatest example of a compassionate, kind, and caring person. My mother-in-law is one of the most Christ-like people that I have ever met. She passed away 4 years ago. I admire her so much, and miss her. She was so kind and caring to everyone. She has 5 sons, so that means she has 5 daughter-in-laws. Never once have I heard her say an unkind word to her daughter-in-laws. I’m sure she may have been frustrated by a daughter-in-law that came from a different country, but she was always so patient and encouraging. She was my best friend. I have 4 sons and someday I will have 4 daughter-in-laws. I want to be just like my mother-in-law. If I become more like her, that means I am becoming closer to Christ.
