Hi I'm Mark Petersen

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a seismologist and study earthquakes around the world. In addition, I have also worked on hazard studies for the United States, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific Islands, and South America. I enjoy time with my family, traveling, skiing, hiking, biking, and cooking.

Why I am a Mormon

I love the gospel of Jesus Christ and want to follow the teachings of the Savior. This past year we visited the holy land. I had the chance to visit the places Jesus walked and taught. The Garden of Gethsemane, Mount of Olives, Golgotha, and the Garden Tomb were very inspiration places. My testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is based on my belief in the Book of Mormon and through answers to prayers. I love the people in the church and feel that they try to follow the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I enjoyed teaching the old testament, new testament, and church history classes in our Sunday School. In particular, I have enjoyed teaching the children and youth. I home teach three families and enjoy visiting with them every month. I have taught one of these families for 10 years and have seen two of the boys become missionaries for the church. As a high counselor I work with the priesthood leaders and family history consultants.

Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

Mark Petersen
In my work as a seismologist I often visit disaster areas following an earthquake. I have seen many people in tent cities who have lost everything and are struggling for survival. Since I was a boy, our church has always encouraged us to be self reliant and prepared for emergencies. Having extra provisions, medical supplies, water, food gives me the opportunity to support my family in times of crisis as well as others who may not have what they need. I am grateful for the inspired words of our prophet that help us prepare for emergencies. Show more Show less
