Hi I'm Mary Kay

I'm a Mormon. I am a published author, illustrator, designer & a yoga teacher.

About Me

I love surfing and travel. I have a baby boy and my newest passion is being a full-time Mom. As a published author and illustrator I'm hoping Motherhood will inspire new creativity in me.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised Catholic and always felt a great reverence and love for Jesus Christ. When I became a yoga teacher I found myself on a search for truth. Pure and simple truth, all of it. I met lots of people who told me "all paths lead to God," and while I respect others spiritual journey as their own, for me it just didn't ring true that everyone with such varied ideas of what the nature of God and man is could be correct. I appreciated the goodness in these sincere spiritual friends but I knew Jesus Christ could not lie, and he said plainly, "I am the truth and the light and the way to eternal life." As a Catholic, I believed with certainty that Jesus came to establish his one true church, and that it must be traceable back to St. Peter. When I met a Jewish convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on a train ride out of Manhattan after a new-age yoga retreat I had attended, We got talking about Jesus Christ. I told this member that I had been ridiculed for being Catholic and for believing Jesus Christ was more than just a great teacher. With no hesitation this bold member stated, "If Jesus Christ was "just a teacher," than he was also a liar, because his teaching was, in no uncertain terms, "I am the way to the Father, and eternal life, live MY gospel." I decided to investigate further whether this was true. I met with Missionaries and read the book of Mormon. I prayed to know by the power of the Holy Spirit whether or not this was true. I know the book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and that his true church, that HE leads through divine revelation, is restored to the earth today! My life has been so blessed by this truth. It is not the truth I expected to find as a yoga teacher, but it is the fullness of the truth and it blesses every part of my life.

How I live my faith

I read the holy scriptures daily, including the King James version of the Bible, and the Book of Mormon. I dress modestly (something I didn't always do as a yoga teacher!) I prayerfully go over my week in my heart and mind before I attend Sunday services where we partake of the Sacrament of bread and water. As I do this I make an effort to repent of wrong doing and seek to recommit myself to living the gospel for another week, and to do better. I serve in the church. I have been a Sunday School teacher for four year olds and now am on an activities committee for planning educational and fun social activities for women. We just had a CPR/First AId course on a Thursday night with some great desserts afterwards. My husband and I have drawn closer to God together through family prayer. This is not something I ever did with my husband as a Catholic but it is pretty standard in Latter Day Saint Families to pray together. I am amazed at the sweet spirit that comes into our home by doing this. It's awesome!
