Hi I'm Jeff Coy

I grew up in California and joined the Mormon church while attending UC Berkeley. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have been married to my wife for over 25 years and I am the father of five daughters. I work as a controls engineer designing satellites and have now moved into management. I now travel around the US helping other controls engineers do what I used to do. I enjoy many outdoor activities including water and snow skiing, hiking, mountain biking and running. I have run four marathons including the Boston marathon. I recently have started road biking. I love spending time talking to my wife and daughters.

Why I am a Mormon

I have always had an interest in God and a love for Jesus. My grandfather, who lived in Washington, was a Baptist minister. He baptized me in the Sacramento River when I was 16. I became very active in my Baptist church in California during my high school years. I had the feeling that there was something more for me. I had thought this meant I would follow in my grandfather's footsteps and become a minister myself some day. I attended UC Berkeley after high school and had a very close friend who was Mormon. She was very strong in her faith as I was in mine. We decided that all is fair in love, war and religion, so we both worked at converting each other. We spent a great deal of time discussing our religions. I always wanted her to listen with her heart to what I was saying, although I never listened to what she was saying with my heart because I did not think I needed to. One day I decided to show her by example how to listen by the heart. I felt something that day that I knew I could not deny. I agreed to listen to the missionaries. They asked me to read the Book of Mormon. I started to read it with the intention of showing that it was not the word of God. After one of the lessons, I told my friend's brother that I did not understand what the missionaries had taught me about the Plan of Salvation. He sat down and explained where we had come from, the purpose of this life, and what would happen after our death. When he finished, I knew what he had taught me was true. I also knew that this is not what I believed from my faith. I read the Book of Mormon more sincerely after that. I had problems believing that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I believed that there were no more prophets after the apostles. However, it made sence to me that if the Book of Mormon was the word of God then Joseph Smith had to be a prophet. As I read the Book of Mormon and prayed about it, I received an answer that it was the word of God. I was baptized on Easter by my good friend's brother.

How I live my faith

I love trying to serve Jesus Christ. It is what brings me the greatest joy and fulfillment in my life. I think my greatest responsibility has been to raise a great family. The teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has taught me and helped me put into practice many things that have helped me to be a better husband and father. It has helped to to keep my family as top focus next to my relationship with my Savior. My family has been blessed by my working to follow the teachings of Mormon Church. I have had many different opportunities to serve others in the Church. I have been involved with the high school youth as an early morning seminary teacher, and as the leader of the young men. I have had the opportunity to teach Sunday school and marriage relations class. I have served as the Bishop of the congregation. I was also able to serve a mission to Switzerland and France. All these opportunities have helped me focus on the needs of others and maybe a little less of my own needs. I feel I have come to know and experience how much God loves each of His children. This has helped me to come to know God better and hopefully become more like Him. I can look back now and see how the Lord has changed me to be a better person. I am a very happy person and I know this is because of my beliefs and working to follow His path.
