Hi I'm Barbara

I'm a convert...widow...mom...grandma and an artist. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a widow now, but have 6 children and an ever growing number of wonderful grandchildren!! I grew up as an only child in Hollywood California always wishing I was a part of a large extended family - like the Waltons on TV...and like I have now!! My parents worked in the entertainment industry beginning as children in vaudeville. Later they moved to Hollywood where Dad was a musician/arranger/composer and Mom was a successful portrait painter for the studios. I guess that is where the love of art was planted deep in my heart. I am not as "tight/realistic" as my Mom was...I prefer Impressionism. I have loved finding those special teachers and classes in a number of different colleges - nothing is more fun than learning! I will always love drawing with pen and ink, but I worked primarily with oils and more recently, watercolor...competing/selling and teaching. I like putting "heart and soul" into my work, rather than doing something simply decorative. I also am excited to learn more about my family's roots! I have become an avid genealogist! I guess I'm all about "family" and sharing all that God has blessed me with!!

Why I am a Mormon

My Dad always wondered why we were born. Where we came from. Where we are going. Those discussions were an intense common thread as I was growing up. And attending all types of religious services together became a pattern - always searching. I went to an Episcopal school, with chapel every morning. Later I enjoyed being with the youth group in a large Presbyterian Church in Hollywood. But my Dad delved into less common theologies too. We even spent a number of years in the Hindu faith - it seemed at the time that reincarnation was the only logical explanation for all the differences we saw in people. When I became a wife and mother my husband and I wanted to settle into one Church with our children. I remember praying fervently for help to find where we should go. We too experimented with a number of churches in our quest. On a family vacation we were looking for a gentler, more rural place to move to we stopped for gas outside of Salt Lake's Temple Square. The boys wanted to stretch their legs so we took the tour there and signed the guest book, not knowing what that might lead to! Ha!. When we got back home the missionaries knocked on our door. One Elder said something like, "We saw that you were at Temple Square. Do you have any questions we could answer?" Ha! He had no idea what he was asking! Yes. I had tons of questions, and I was so glad for the chance to ask them! And amazingly....they had answers. All the answers to all the questions I had had over the past 30 years of life! I only wished my father was still alive to hear them with me.....

How I live my faith

My favorite Church responsibility is teaching Gospel Doctrine classes. No wonder, I suppose, because I have always had an unquenchable thirst to know more about Father in Heaven, my Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. I want to learn more about how they would want us to live our lives. How to feel closer to them..to better remember my Savior's life and mission. And there is nothing I enjoy more than sharing spiritual moments with others in one-on-one conversations or in the class environment! My day can't begin without reading my scriptures and talking to my Father in Heaven in prayer. Thank goodness for the Atonement of Jesus Christ so no matter what my weaknesses are I know I can be forgiven and start fresh again...with the Lord's help and grace to give me hope! The Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about hope and happiness! I want to do everything I can to live with my Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ again, as well as an Eternity with my family!
