Hi I'm Andrew

Hi! I'm a lawyer with the government. I enjoy volunteering and hiking in the wilderness of Canada. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married to a wonderful woman and we are trying hard to raise our five children to be responsible adults who contribute positively to their community. I love being a father, but I admit that I make a lot of mistakes (it's good my children and wife are patient with me). I enjoy sports, especially hockey and Canadian football. My favourite activities are kayaking and hiking and I try to do one major trip per year where I can take my children and spend some time with them experiencing the majesty of nature. Volunteering is an important part of my life and I believe it is my responsibility as a citizen to work to improve my community. I work as a lawyer for the provincial government and previously I worked as an environmental lawyer and for a not-for-profit poverty law organization. I hope that my work and volunteer work makes a difference in my community.

Why I am a Mormon

My mother joined the LDS Church as a youth and my father joined shortly after I was born. I was raised by good parents who encouraged me to seek truth. When I was 14 I decided I needed to know if the Church was true. I began to read the Book of Mormon. I figured that if the Book of Mormon was true, then Jesus really is the Son of God, and with Heavenly Father, appeared to Joseph Smith Jr., calling him to be a prophet. And if Joseph is a prophet then the Church is indeed all it claims to be. It took me a while to read it, mainly because I was not that diligent at doing so, but when I was 16 I finally finished. I decided to put the promise made in the last chapter of the book (Moroni 10:3-5) to the test. If it was true, God would let me know and I was prepared to live my life accordingly. If it was not true, then I wanted nothing to do with it. I knelt down and began to pray. I immediately felt the most wonderful feeling of love and peace. It felt like God himself had come down and put his arms around me. It was a feeling that words simply cannot do justice to. I knew without any doubt that the Book of Mormon was the word of God and that Joseph Smith Jr. was truly a prophet. Not everyone receives an answer like this, but God knew that it was what I needed for my life.

How I live my faith

In the Church we all have opportunities to serve in various organizational positions. This service is offered with no monetary compensation. We terms this service as "callings" because where we serve is determined by our leaders who do so by inspiration from God. We are "called" to serve in the position. It matters not where we serve, but rather how we serve. In my life I have served as a teacher of the children and the youth, a missionary, employment specialist, and in various leadership callings. In each of those callings the goal is to help others come to Christ. In our congregations we are like a big family, helping and supporting each other. Every calling and every member is important in our church family. In my calling I seek the guidance of God to inspire and help me. I have felt the inspiration of God throughout my service in the Church. Someday I will be released from my current calling and given another one. I will try to serve well in whatever calling I have because I know that the Lord Jesus Christ is guiding the Church and that callings are inspired by Him.

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

God is our Father in Heaven. He loves all his children, no matter who they are or what they do. He is all-powerful, all-wise and perfect. He is loving, kind, merciful and just. He is always there for us to talk to through prayer. As our Father, he wants us to be happy. He knew that in order for us to experience the fullness of joy that He has we had to become like him. He prepared a plan for us to find joy in this life and to have happiness forever with Him when this life is over. Knowing that He has such love for me helps me to communicate with him in prayer and to receive guidance for my life. Show more Show less
