Hi I'm Kathleen

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a science teacher. I love photography and the outdoors.

Why I am a Mormon

I began my conversion to the Church about six years ago. I was not looking for a church, but I had a hope, deep inside my heart, that there was a God who listened and acted. I was sitting in silence as we drove over the Grand Tetons, having just heard the testimony of one of my friends. Never had I felt such a strong impression of truth. Still in silence, I began to pray. I promised the Lord that if this was the His church, I would follow Him, wherever it may bring me. I looked over that mountain and I could feel the Spirit of the Lord with me. I felt assurance that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is God's church on earth. I cannot explain to you the feelings that come from the spirit of truth, but I can promise you, that when that assurance comes, you will know it, and you will not be able to deny it. I went to my cabin that night and knelt down in prayer, again promising our Father in Heaven that if He told me the church was true, I would go and follow the Lord in His church. The next morning I woke, and sat on the steps outside with the Book of Mormon. Something was different. The Spirit of God was with me. I read with new eyes words that I had seen several times before, now with the revelation of the Holy Ghost to help me to understand the Lord's true message. The Book of Mormon was true, the church was true, and I was going to be part of the Lord's work here on earth. I was baptized a short while later. It is the best decision I have made in my life. That one act of faith has not only blessed me, but my family, friends, and everyone I have come in contact with. That was it. A knowledge of the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ was all I had to start with. My testimony has grown to include a knowledge of the truthfulness of Joseph Smith and all the prophets of the Lord, the divine purpose and blessings of the temple, the priesthood, and so much more. I don't know who may read this, but my heart is full of love for you.

How I live my faith

I am blessed to have been given many different callings in the church. Right now I am a seminary teacher. That means I wake up really early in the morning to teach the scriptures to high school students before the school day begins. After that, I go to work, and teach high school children for another 8 hours. My day is so blessed because of the extra strength and support I feel throughout the day by starting every morning with studying the scriptures. Because I teach in a public school, I am not able to share my faith with the people I see most. However, I try to live so that they see my example and conduct. Hopefully one day when my students are on the street and they meet a missionary, or someone says something about the church, they will think back to my actions. "Hey, my chemistry teacher was a Mormon, and she was pretty cool" And, by pretty cool I mean really dorky, but in in a fun way.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Kathleen
As a convert who lives in New York, many of my friends and family are not members, and therefore do not live by the Word of Wisdom. I think the most poignant question I have been asked was by a friend who respected that I not drink, but asked, "Why can't I believe and Jesus and have a drink? What does one have to do with the other?" My response is this Over time, I have developed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I have felt his presence and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my life. I don't just believe in Him, I believe Him. I truly believe he told us not to use certain substances. It would be very different if I used those substances than if my friend did as he does not have the same belief. As a scientist, I know that there are many health reasons that can "back up" the benefits of the Word of Wisdom. I don't need them. I don't need to justify the Lord. I am at a point in my relationship with Christ where I know when He is speaking. I know it to be the truth, and I trust him. Just as you might trust a friend or relative who you have built a relationship with, even if they did not give you a reason. Show more Show less
