Hi I'm Heather Harkness

I have been a Uni student with Narcolepsy. Faith & the Priesthood have given me the capacity to serve a mission in Melbourne 2012

About Me

I grew up in a small country town in Victoria and lived in Perth (WA) for a few years at the end of year 12. I have completed a Diploma of Music and have deferred my Bachelor of Education (Primary) to serve the Lord as a Missionary for a year and a half. I come from a family of 5. I love the outdoors, working with and teaching children. I love life, learning and believe everyone "can" make a difference in the world we live... I was diagnosed with severe Narcolepsy 2 years ago which has been a challenge but the diagnosis a blessing in itself. It is only through living the principles that are found in the LDS church that I have the ability and strength that I need each day to perform life’s daily/simple tasks. I can witness of the healing power of faith, prayer, fasting, and temple work and have felt physical blessings come from sharing the gospel.

Why I am a Mormon

Some say to me that if you have grown up in a certain religion you have not chosen to have it in your life but have had your beliefs forced upon you. What these people do not realise is that it only through choosing to live the teachings of ones faith that one becomes more fully converted, over and over again throughout life. For me I always knew the Church was true from by the peaceful feeling the spirit gave me within my heart, also from seeing the happiness and comfort the gospel gave my family and I. I found it easy living a lot of the standards my parents taught when I was young, however at the time I did not realise I was neglecting the two fundamental principles that help a person develop and increase their own faith and own testimony... those two things where Prayer and Scripture study. After facing some challenges on my own I became “converted” to livening the gospel more whole heartedly at the age of 22. It took time but as I began edifying my soul through daily scripture study and more meaningful prayers I felt my relationship with heavenly father grow. I felt his unique love for me, the healing power of the atonement and more peace and joy than I had been able to comprehend before. The spiritual growth I can see looking back on the past two years is truly a blessing in my life. This is my only wish now, to share the Gospel “good news” the divine love and forgiveness that I have felt towards me with my fellow brothers and sisters : )

How I live my faith

I strive to live the gospel principles to better myself physically, spiritually, emotionally and educationally to improve my relationships with family, future family, those I associate and come in contact with. This also better prepares me to share the gospel with those who are interested. I love working with youth, helping them to recognise their potential, what they can achieve and how through developing a relationship with Heavenly Father from a young age helps them to make not just ‘good or better decisions’ in life but the “BEST”. When I return from my mission I hope to become involved with a national interfaith group so that I can become more aware of those around me, their beliefs and help to serve the community and resolve any issues or conflict that arises. The church encourages us to perform service to others, becoming selfless helps us become better people so I like to assist others where ever I can weather it be through conversation, being an example, finances or visiting the elderly :) I am currently serving full time in the Australian Melbourne Mission, I am so grateful for the opportunity to shear the joyous message of the restoration of Christs original church back on the earth : ) It changes my life for the better every day as I live what I believe as it will yours. Choose to listen to the sweet & simple message the missionaries shear, they will help you increase you happiness and faith in Jesus Christ...improve the quality of your life, through the saviour we can all have the lasting peace to get us through the tough times, which helps us look forward to the future with optimism .
