Hi I'm Dan

I live in Spokane, Washington. I like physics, work as a software engineer, tune pianos, and grow a large garden. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I joined the church when I was in college and served as a missionary in Scotland a year and a half later. My degree is in physics and I work as a consultant doing software for embedded systems. I tune pianos and love to play piano for pleasure at home and at church. I grow a large garden and enjoy the fruits of this labor. I am married to a nurse and we have 4 boys who are now out of the house. My favorite calling in the church is working with Boy Scouts. We have six grandchildren.

Why I am a Mormon

One day while I was in the back yard of my apartment, whittling a wooden musical instrument, I felt a strong impression to move the front of the apartment. This was unusual because I usually enjoyed the privacy of the back yard. I resisted for a while, but finally moved to the front steps. After settling down and resuming my carving, I noticed two women, dressed nicely, walk past on the sidewalk. I felt that they should stop to see me. When they reached the corner, they stopped and talked to each other for a while and then came back. They said that they were missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and felt impressed to talk to me. They asked if I would be interested to know about a prophet on the earth today. Certainly, I would be interested. They left me a pamphlet about Joseph Smith and a copy of the Book of Mormon. I read the promise on the back of the pamphlet which said that if I would read these things sincerely and ask God if they were not true, that the Holy Ghost would manifest the truth of them unto me. For the next two weeks, I read the Book of Mormon every night and prayed to know if it was true. I felt the Spirit as I prayed and determined that the Book of Mormon must be true. When I finished the book, I went to the missionaries and asked how I could be baptized. They taught me the missionary lessons and I was baptized. I have been a member of the church for over 40 years now and my family and I have been greatly blessed by being members of the church.

How I live my faith

As a member of the church, I have many opportunities to serve others. I have worked in many capacities with the youth of the church. I have taught lessons to youth, adults, and new members. I play the piano and organ for church functions. I presently serve as the scoutmaster for the troop sponsored by my ward. All of these are opportunities to serve others without pay. As members of the church, we are each assigned a few families to visit regularly and I enjoy the opportunity to serve as a home teacher to the families assigned to me. At home, I pray regularly and study the scriptures which include the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other modern-day revelations to prophets and apostles. I attend church every Sunday and try to keep Sunday as a holy day by refraining from normal work and recreational activities.
