Hi I'm Jeff

I'm a dad, step dad, family blender, basketball lover, smoothie fan, choral arranger...and a Mormon.

About Me

I felt blindsided when my active, healthy, vibrant wife suddenly suffered a brain aneurism. One minute she and our youngest daughter were enjoying an early evening walk in the neighborhood. 20 minutes later I had rushed her, moaning, to the hospital. Next thing I knew she was undergoing emergency brain surgery which led to several weeks in a coma. 8 months later, after many ups and downs, she passed away. Our 2 youngest of 5 children were in junior high and high school. Rather than feeling anger at God for taking her, we have felt His gentle comfort in our lives. What we know of Our Heavenly Father's plan and the reason for this mortal life gives us peace and reassurance. We know we will be together again. Since then I have met and married an amazingly wonderful woman whose husband had also suddenly passed away leaving her with 5 of their 8 children still at home. She is truly a blessing to me and my children. Of our combined 13 children, 3 are still at home. I've found my heart has room for more and more, without subtracting a whit from my love of those already so dear to me. And I'm enjoying another round of coaching little league baseball. Life is not easy, but life is great! I enjoy graphic design, music, smoothies (don't forget to add a banana), and sports. I love playing basketball, especially 3 on 3. I learned to sing parts as a reluctant boy in a church choir. Who'd have thought? Since then I have directed choirs and published a book of SATB arrangements.

Why I am a Mormon

Simply because it is true: Jesus Christ is my Savior and this is His Church. This Church is all about Jesus Christ. His name is at the center of the Church's name, He is at the center of our services, and He is in the center of our hearts. Every prayer, lesson, and sermon is offered in His name, and every ordinance is done by His restored authority. He literally suffered for our sins and now offers forgiveness through the Atonement. I love the imagery of His arms extended to gather us "as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings" (Matthew 23:37). That is how it feels to me as He blesses my life. I'm also uplifted with the imagery of being yoked side by side with Him as He helps us upward on life's road to a higher goal and a better destination. With Him beside us, "my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30). Jesus Christ has restored His Church and leads it today. He is alive. He is interested. I love that. He is not off somewhere in the universe indifferent to us, neither is He somehow unable to re-establish and direct His Church. He leads His Church today through living prophets, apostles, and other leaders through inspiration and revelation. He inspires each of us in our own families and responsibilities through the Gift of the Holy Ghost. This divine gift is conferred in HIs Church after baptism by someone with authority (Priesthood) as the Savior taught in both the Bible and Book of Mormon. As a result, the Holy Ghost has comforted and guided me throughout my life. It is an amazing blessing of the restored Church with the restored authority to perform that ordinance. That Gift is available to all. You can receive it for yourself – and so can your family members. That's why the Priesthood has been restored in our day. What a blessing it will be in your lives!

How I live my faith

I have participated a lot over the years in our local ward, especially in the Young Mens program (ages 12-18). We provide Scouting experiences during the week and spiritual instruction each Sunday. In both settings we teach them to be good citizens, to give service, to be spiritually grounded, and to be a positive influence. We also have frequent interaction with the Young Womens program and enjoy activities together. Both are incredible programs for building vibrant, fun-loving youth who learn leadership and service within a context of faith and devotion to Our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Now I'm currently working with the Young Men and Young Women programs, and also the Primary (children up to age 11). I also interact closely with our Relief Society (women's service and learning organization) and two Priesthood Quorums (men's service and leadership organizations.) As you can see, this Church is truly a family church, with something meaningful and strengthening to every member of the family. As a family, we enjoy the blessing of starting each morning and ending each evening together in family prayer. We try our best to read from and discuss the scriptures for a few minutes each evening. We also enjoy Family Home Evening each Monday and attending Sunday services each week. My wife and I pray each night as a couple to seek the Lord's help as we strive to be good parents. I also enjoy personal scripture study and prayer. More importantly, we look for ways to serve and help others as the Savior taught. I also enjoy participating in church sports programs and in our church choir. Yes, life can still be very hard at times, which is according to Heavenly Father's plan, but life is good.

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Jeff
Don't be afraid to invite the missionaries to your home. They are fine young men and women who will bring a good spirit into your home. You will enjoy meeting them. They have three lessons that will most likely be of great interest to you: 1. The nature of God and the origin of our Church: Most people wonder about who or what God is and how or whether He interacts with or even cares about us. Most people are also curious about the Mormon church, where it came from, why, and what we believe. There are also many misconceptions out there. This is your chance to find out the truth about those things. 2. God's plan for us: Where we came from, why we are here on earth, and where we go after this life. You will love this! (Teaser: It's called Our Heavenly Father's Plan of HAPPINESS!) 3. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. You will come to appreciate the breadth and depth of our love, devotion, and reverence to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the living Son of the living God, and He has saved us from two deaths. Faith in Him leads us to repentance, baptism (forgiveness), the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and many other blessings in life. They will be able to answer other questions you may have, and will pray with you and your family. They can help you make prayer more a part of your life. It will be nice. Don't hesitate to invite them. Show more Show less
