Hi I'm Katy

I grew up in Illinois. I'm the oldest child of 4 girls. I'm studying Special Education with a minor in history. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college student who likes to read, listen to music, sing, watch movies, and hang out with my family and friends. My favorite color is yellow. I enjoy Italian food and music with good vocals and soul!  One of my favorite things to learn about is history because there is so much that we can take from the past. It really is not as long gone as we sometimes imagine, so realizing the lasting effects of past events and taking experiences and ideas from them to apply today is personally very fulfilling in my life.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because the things I have learned and understand through the teachings of the LDS church make me so happy! The perspective that I have about life and death, the future and the past, allow everything to make so much more sense. Life is simpler when explained by the gospel of Jesus Christ. Things take on different meanings. Details that seemed so monumental before become unimportant in comparison to the big picture and so it is easier to deal with the trials in life when I can see ahead and I know what my goals are. I know that reading the Book of Mormon changes lives because it has changed mine. I understand Jesus Christ's sacrifice for me so much better the more I study and pray about it. I realize that I will not fully comprehend what he did for me until after I die, but for now, the understanding that I do have, is lovely and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I will work my entire life to build God's kingdom here on earth and follow his prophet because that is what can bring me, my family, and everyone around me back my Heavenly Father's presence after this life. And THAT is the ultimate reward.

How I live my faith

At church, I am in a singles ward which means that we are all young unmarried individuals. We have been split up into "families" of about 18 people in each group, and two "parents" are assigned to be in charge of doing activities with the family every Monday night. I am the "Mom" of one of the groups and I get to come up with fun bonding things to do every week. I also am involved in visiting teaching, which is where I am assigned to work with one other girl and teach/visit with a couple other girls in the ward every month. I have gained some great friends through visiting teaching and I have been strengthened not only by those who visit teach me, but also from the girls that I visit. It is a wonderful experience.   I also live my faith every day by remembering Christ in all my doings and striving to always act as he would in my place. I try to be friendly to everyone and amplify Christ to those around me.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Katy
The Word of Wisdom is a revelation that Joseph Smith received in the 1800s in regards to health and wellness. Members of the church are counseled to abstain from alcohol, harmful substances, strong drinks coffee, tea, etc. We are also told that meat is here for our good and that we should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as well. Keeping the Word of Wisdom helps keep not only your body clean, but also your spirit so that you can be both physically and emotionally strong.   Show more Show less

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

Katy
The universe is filled with evidence of God. The biggest thing to me is natural beauty and the complexity of life. The fact that there are so many gorgeous flowers and plants for us to enjoy is phenomenal. I have a cousin who is in studying the human body and is a Teaching Assistant for Human Anatomy. She frequently explains things to me in practice for her lessons and I am always amazed at the structures and details of our bodies! God made everything to work so perfectly. And with so many intricate details, it is a wonder that more things do not go wrong medically. We are built in God's image and you can see it in everyone around you. I also know that God exists because of how many lovely and enjoyable things are available to me! There are uplifting songs, movies, games, books, and all point to a God. Anything that makes me happy reminds me that there is a God in the heavens and that He loves me personally. Counting my blessings reminds me that despite the Devil's attempts to ruin the world, Heavenly Father is still helping me to find happiness a midst the tough times and it is beautiful. Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Katy
God has always loved his children on earth and wants us to be happy and live with Him again after this life. The only way that we are able to do this is by following His commandments and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And the way that we can know about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and what the commandments are, is through a prophet to reveal those things to us. Abraham, Moses, and others taught the gospel to the people in their day so that they could come closer to Christ and be happy and know His gospel. So why not today? Every time people start rejecting the prophets and refuse to believe, the truths and authority of God are taken from the earth. However, when the people are ready to listen again, God always restores the truths to the earth again through a prophet. In our time, these truths were restored through the prophet Joseph Smith and then the authority was passed down through the years to Thomas S. Monson today. He leads and guides the church and teaches all people how to become happier! It is such a blessing for me to follow the guidance of our prophet. Sometimes I am not sure if I want to do what he says, but every time I follow through and continue to show my faith in Jesus Christ by following His prophet, I am blessed and I know that President Monson is speaking the words of God for my benefit and yours!
