Hi I'm Nathan J.

I'm a dad, a wilderness explorer, a teacher, a child advocate, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I care deeply about the people I love and admire. I will do everything in my power to provide peace and happiness for my children and myself. My desire to raise informed, healthy children motivates every decision I make. I feel compassion for all children and any person in need. Every day I get to teach children with special needs and collaborate with teachers to create inclusive classrooms at an excellent elementary school. I also strive for a life that balances giving to others with caring for myself and those closest to me. I am a single dad of four delightful children. My faith in Christ and acceptance of His promises guides me through good days and difficult days. I love exploring mountains, deserts, and forests to find excitement and peace. I hope each day will be the best yet and accept each moment for what it is.

Why I am a Mormon

I choose to remain a Mormon because I have found a happy life despite tough circumstances by living the principles I learned as a Mormon teenager. When I was a teen I learned the principle of knowledge when I studied the scriptures and learned from my parents and leaders in the church. I learned the principle of service when I helped other people regularly. Scouting gave me chances to meet new people and learn new ideas about many topics. I learned the principle of faith by praying and taking time to wait for answers. The principles I learned built my character and helped me become the man I am. In the last few months, I have again chosen to remain a Mormon. Marriage is really important to the doctrine and the culture of members of the church. People who are not married sometimes feel like they don't fit into a social group that spends significant time and energy teaching about and supporting married couples. Recently, my marriage ended because my wife chose to leave our family after a change in her mental health. The way that I suddenly lost her felt devastating. It felt as if she had died. I continue to search for healing as I grieve and accept the new reality that my family faces. The principles I learned as a teen have been the foundation of my ability to make difficult decisions and get the support I need to get my family through this change. I know that living by principles that I have tested in the past will give my children and I peace, love, and stability.

How I live my faith

I live what I believe by talking with God, my Heavenly Father, many times each day. Prayer influences my daily decisions because He sends me inspiration and guidance through feelings and ideas. When I have feelings and ideas that feel right, or good I know that they come from God by the power of the Holy Ghost. I am also teaching my four delightful children to pray and pay attention to these special feelings and ideas.

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

Nathan J.
The original 12 Apostles of Jesus died leaving no one with the authority of Jesus to lead his church. After this, leaders in the world liked the ideas of Christianity and tried to keep them going, but they did not actually have the authority of Jesus to carry on His work. I believe that Jesus restored His gospel through Joseph Smith to reestablish His church with the same authority He gave the original 12 apostles. I have always thought that we should only do things for God's church if we are authorized by Him to do so. The Bible tells many true stories about God and His Son, Jesus. Sadly, many important truths that used to be in the Bible were lost in translation over hundreds of years. Men and women can't get the authority of God from the Bible or any other book. It only is given by God and by doing the things Jesus requires. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Nathan J.
I don't worship Joseph Smith. I worship Jesus Christ and God the Father. I feel most worshipful when I feel the power of the Holy Spirit. Show more Show less
