Hi I'm John

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

We have a mixed family; I am a father of 5 children and stepfather to 2 more children and 2 lazy cats. We have three children in college. My oldest is married and lives far away, but we still email, text, and use Facebook to communicate. I teach at a local university and run a very small software company on the side. My wife also teaches at a local college. Needless to say, we have a very busy life at home and at work. I am physically challenged with a unusual strain of muscular dystrophy which makes it difficult to participate in most physical activities so we don't have "family fun" in the traditional manner. My wife and I are technology junkies and enjoy using and implementing technology to enhance our busy lives and our study of the gospel.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised as a Mormon in a small community and did everything that was expected of me. I participated in church meetings and church activities, but over time I slowly started to make poor decisions which led me away from the church and much unhappiness in my life. I realized that I had fooled myself into thinking that I did not need the church in my life, I thought I could live my life the way I wanted to and be happy "my way". Eventually I reached what I call "rock bottom" in my life, I had lost almost everything that was important to me; my wife and my family. I was humbled by my situation in life and I realized that I wanted to repent and come back into the gospel of Jesus Christ, to be a good strong Mormon. It was a long hard road that took many years. Eventually I met a wonderful woman with common goals of living the gospel and we were married. Thanks to my wife for her help and patience with me as my testimony grew, I have gained a strong personal testimony of Jesus Christ and the truthfulness of the gospel. This testimony also comes with a strong desire to do whatever is needed to live the principles of the gospel, help others to come unto Christ, and be good dedicated Mormons with my family.

How I live my faith

The Mormon church is a church of service. Service to others is a primary function of Mormons. Our current leader and Phophet Thomas S. Monson teaches us that "The prayers of people are almost always answered by the actions of others" It is our responsibility to live in such a way that we are willing and able to help others when we are called to, and also when we feel promted to in our hearts. As a Mormon I have two service assignments, the first is in the Boy Scouts helping the youth of our local area by keeping track of the merit madges and awards they earn. The second is what we call a "Home Teacher". A home teacher is assigned a few families to visit every month and assess their needs, teach a short gospel lesson, and offer help if needed. As a Mormon we make certain commitments to help the church with the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ as well as supporting our local community. We offer support in physical, spiritual, and financial ways. Service to others is a blessing to all who participate. I am dedicated to living my life in such a way that I am willing and able to help others and the church as needed.
