Hi I'm Marci Umberger Girardin

I'm a high school teacher, wife and mom. I wear the same size socks I did in HS. I'm a mormon.

About Me

A friend, a new convert to the church, after reading a few profiles on mormon.org, asked me what a Molly Mormon is. I tried to describe her as best I could. I am not her. I am a mother of 4 children. I named them after characters from Sesame Street. Today I “ran” in a 5K and I thought about what I’ve done, or not done in my lifetime and how content I am with who I’ve become to this point. I like to participate in races but I’m not breaking any land speed records. I just love the feeling of accomplishment and being surrounded by so many people doing the best they can to get to a finish line. I’m not a runner, just a really fast walker, but not like the ones you see wearing Rockports doing laps in the mall. I once played the violin and a family loaned me a violin for 2 years, if memory serves correct it was a Guarneri. I cried when I returned it to them. I was no concert violinist, but that violin made me feel like one. I’m still moved when I hear a really good violinist and wonder if I might have become that good one day if I’d stuck with it. I served a mission in Chile from 1992-1994. On a preparation day our district went to a ski run in the Andes mountains and tubed down. It was a great activity. So I’m no downhill slalom skier, just a return missionary who almost skied in the Andes.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to parents who were already members of the church. From a young age I've had the gift of a testimony that I am a daughter of God. He knows me and I feel His love in so many things around me. I may not yet be everything He intends for me to be but I know I can become anything through exercising faith in Him and following his commandments. The gospel of Jesus Christ gives my life direction and meaning. It fills me with peace and joy and helps me to know how to raise my own children. I’m not a runner, I’m not a skier, I’m not a concert violinist. I am a member missionary, a Spanish teacher, a mother, a wife and I’m a mormon who’s enjoying all life has to offer as I make my way to the finish line.

How I live my faith

I’ve been a high school Spanish teacher for 15 years. Teaching just happened to be the career I fell into. I enjoy it most days, when the lesson goes as planned and the students are there with me. Otherwise, most days it’s like herding cats, I do not like cats. I'm the Spanish Honor Society sponsor and department head. I'm also a Webelos leader. I belong to the local gym. I have a library card, I like to read when I have time. I’m a returned missionary and I still enjoy missionary work. I love to share the gospel with anyone who will listen and have had the privilege of seeing my convert of a husband baptize one of my favorite college Spanish professors and his son. Recently my friend joined the church after I simply said to him one Spring afternoon after much talk of gardening and canning, “You ought to be a Mormon.” He took it to heart and read the Book of Mormon. The rest is history.
