Hi I'm LaRay

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am an elementary school teacher, married to another elementary school teacher, who happens to teach the same grade at the same school with me! We are lucky to have our granddaughter at our school with us and also in the same grade, although she is in another class. When not teaching, I love to travel. Some of my favorite trips were to Greece, Israel, London, Hawaii and Mexico. Last summer my husband and I cruised to Alaska and this summer we are spending a week, in Iowa, at a friend's dairy farm! On the weekend I like to go out with friends to eat and to the movies. I spend my free time doing my favorite hobby - reading! I belong to a book club with some friends from church and we've been reading some old classics, such as Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, and some new books, such as The Help and Three Cups of Tea. My husband and I enjoy spending time with our immediate family - two daughters, who are both college students, a son and his new wife, and our granddaughter - and also our extended family, who luckily live close by!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Mormon family. I have ancestors that were pioneers and had joined the church iin Canada, England and Scotland. I loved growing up in the church and going to weekly children's Primary meetings. Later, as a teenager, I enjoyed attending the Young Women's activities such as girl's camp and the dances. In my high school, there were only about 5 of us who were Mormon, and I was the only Mormon in my grade. I had many friends who were not religious, and as I saw the differences in their life compared to mine, I saw them make some horrible decisions that had long term effects on their potential future happiness. My life wasn't perfect, my parents had divorced when I was a preteen, and I made my share of mistakes, but I knew that my Fatther in Heaven loved me and cared about me and that Jesus Christ had atoned for my sins and had felt everything that I was going through. I tried to be an example to my friends, and I guess it worked, because my future husband became interested in knowing more about the Mormon church. It took a while, but he eventually got the answers he was seeking and joined the church a few months before we were married. Even though I was "born in the church" I had to discover for myself the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have found that through reading the scriptures, praying and serving others.

How I live my faith

I feel that I am very blessed, because I think I have the best two "jobs" in the church! I get to teach music to the children age 18 months - 12 years old every Sunday, in Primary and teach the youth age 14 - 18 every morning, in Seminary. In Seminary we study the New and Old Testament, The Book of Mormon and Church History in the Doctrine and Covenants. Some of my friends think I'm crazy to get up at 530 a.m. and go teach a bunch of teenagers, but I love it! The students are so great and energizing, that it's such a great way to start the day!
