Hi I'm Thomas

I'm a mathematician, I'm a professor, I'm a father and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

There are three things that I love above all else. First, I love being a father and a husband. I enjoy teaching, serving, sharing and doing things with my children. I have two boys and two girls. They drive me crazy at times, but they are also the source of my greatest joy. I love to help my wife. She is wonderful and kind and very patient. The second thing I love is mathematics both teaching it and discovering new mathematics. I teach at a good size state regional university in Oklahoma. I especially love when my students come to learn and understand new concepts. My third greatest love is teaching the gospel. I have discovered that in any activity in the church, there are always opportunities to teach and share the gospel. I greatly enjoy the spirit I feel, and others feel when I learn and teach sacred and eternal truths.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents are both converts to the church, but I grew up attending the church regularly. I remember always going to church. When I was older, about to go serve a mission, I decided that I should pray to find out if the church was really true. As I knelt to pray that evening, I asked Heavenly Father if the Book of Mormon was true, and if, as a result, the church was true. While I had received many answers to prayers in my life, this was the first time that I ever heard a voice. Not an actual voice, but very clearly in my mind, I distinctly heard the word, "You already know it is true." I realized at that point that I did. I had seen many things throughout my life that led me to believe. I had felt the Holy Spirit as I read the scripture. I had seen blessing from my Heavenly Father as I lived His commandments, and I had felt the love and redeeming power of my Savior. I knew at that time, as I know now, that Jesus Christ loves me. He is my Savior and my Redeemer, and his arms of mercy are extended to us at all times.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith in many ways. For example, as a father. I try the teach my children, through my example and though word, of my love of the Savior and of His gospel and His teaching. At church, I currently help coordinate our assignments to attend and help clean the temple. I love this calling as it has helped me to better understand what a blessing the temple is in our lives, and its role in strengthening our families. It is in the temple that a family can receive the promise that they can be together forever. I also help serve as a scout committee member. This is a fun calling, and gives me the chance to frequently interact with the young men in the ward. As a former scout master for many of the boys, it is fun to see them still progressing as scouts.
