Hi I'm Duane Mathias

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a retired Air Force Officer of 21 years, I then started an Electrical contracting business which I managed for about 17 years and is now being operated by my son in law and his brother. I also have a general contractors license and I enjoy building cost effective, energy efficient homes with some passive solar properties.

Why I am a Mormon

I first became acquainted with the Latter-day Saints about the time that I was graduating from high school. At that time our family was attending the Methodist church which had a Methodist Youth Fellowship group. At one of those meetings they invited the Mormon Missionaries in for a comparative religion class, my brother and his fiancé were in attendance. My brother was really impressed with the missionaries and the doctrine and principles that they taught. Like any new convert he was eager to pass on this new found faith and immediately started to convert me. My brother and his new wife joined the church soon after they were married, which caused no small stir within both families. I loved the new doctrine my brother had found, but because of the contentions caused by his conversion I became a dry Mormon, one who believes but is not baptized. However, like any new convert I could not stop talking about it to all my close friends including my girl friend and her family. We had decided to get married after I had completed my aviation cadet training and had made arrangements at her church but when I asked her father for her hand in marriage he simply said No! He was a good man but he had some misgivings about my feelings toward the Mormon church. That summer Helen came to Keesler AFB and we were married by an LDS Chaplain. My brother baptized us a year later. I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints now for over 50 years and next to marrying my wonderful sweetheart it has been the best decision that I have ever made in my life. It is more then just another religion but a whole way of life that can bring numerous blessings, not only for the eternities but in our every day walk through this mortal existence. The Latter day Saints is the best community that you can find to live in and to raise your children in. I have been greatly blessed through my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints

How I live my faith

I always feel the best sermons preached are preached by actions rather then by words. I feel the best way to serve the Lord is by serving your fellow man. We frequently take in visitors that are having health problems and are seeking help from the Mayo Clinic. This has been a blessing for both them and us. I love to do missionary work. My service in the Air Force was also my service to the Lord as my Mormon faith was always on display. My service in Viet Nam also was a missionary call for my faith. I have also served in Scouting and have been a Scout Master several times and taken many high adventure trips with Scout aged boys. My wife and I served a Humanitarian Mission in Myanmar and are curently serving a mission in California. I love the principle of free agency as taught by the LDS church. We all come as spirit children from your Heavenly Fathers kingdom as free agents, we love to exercise that freedom and make our own choices even if some times we make poor choices. Thankfully, because of the atoning sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ we can repent of those bad choices and hopefully make choices in keeping with our Heavenly Fathers commandments.
