Hi I'm Joe

I'm a husband, a father, a recreation professional, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I consider myself an easy going and usually an optimistic person. I am married to my best friend and have two smart and beautiful girls that love to pretend and play and a little boy, who is just learning to play. My life seems to revolve around my family, my students, and the Lord. I enjoy being in the outdoors, playing most sports, sitting around a table playing card games, and traveling. I currently work for a small liberal arts university teaching recreation, sport, and tourism. I do what I do because I am convinced recreation is an essential part of life and how we choose to spend our leisure shows our commitment to the Lord. I believe the choices we make during leisure will ultimately help us succeed or fail in life, both temporally and spiritually. With that philosophy, I try to instill in my children and my students the belief that wholesome recreation can cure the ills of society by bringing families closer together, improving our health, strengthening communities, and allowing us to see the gifts the Lord has given us.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the church but never took advantage of that blessing. However, looking back, my parents worked hard to instill in me the principles of the gospel, which eventually surfaced early in my sophomore year in college. It was then I realized that I always knew that Christ was my Savior. From that point, I began to study the scriptures and came to a greater understanding of the purpose of life. I believe that all faiths teach portions of the truth, but it was the spiritual experiences I received that year, from the Lord, that led me to believe that the fullness of the gospel was only found in the LDS church. After these experiences, I began to prepare to serve a Christian mission. While serving the Lord in California, I gained a greater understanding of the gospel, which complemented my own beliefs and solidified my faith. I have come to truly know Jesus Christ as my Savior and that Joseph Smith was His prophet in these latter days. I finally understand where I came from, why I am here, and where I am going. The principles of continual revelation through prophets, priesthood authority, forgiveness, eternal families, and the pursuit of joy through Christ's death and resurrection has become the foundation of my faith. For these reason, my testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Christ's only fully restored church on the earth has been solidified. It is because of Christ's role in my own life, I am able to embrace life more fully.

How I live my faith

The biggest impact my belief in Christ has on my life is how it influences the daily decisions I make. Everything from how I talk, to what I drink, to my career pursuits, and even how I spend my weekends. Because I am responsible for the decisions I make and the life I live, I strive to make the best choices I can. To that end, I think the best way for me to live my faith is by consistently making the decisions to do the important things in life including spending time with my family, reading the scriptures daily, praying to God often, forgiving and serving others, and being a good friend. Although I am rarely successful in doing these things everyday, I am actively striving to do better each day.
