Hi I'm Jordan Berg

I'm a molecular biologist, a marathoner, and I am a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Jordan and I am studying molecular biology at Brigham Young University with plans to go on to graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. I study bacteriophage, a type of virus that attacks a specific host bacterium, and focus on a bacteriophage specific for an apple and pear bacterium. In my free time, I enjoy hiking (and being out in nature in general) and running (especially running). I am training to qualify to run in the Boston marathon and love it, even all the pain! I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Fresno, California and throughout other areas within the Central Valley region of California. I have one brother who is younger than me and is serving in the Marines Corps and I am very proud of him.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in the church and I always knew the church taught good principles, but I was never fully committed to the gospel throughout most of my childhood. It wasn't until my freshman and sophomore years of high school when I faced particular challenges in my life that I felt a desire to really get a testimony about the gospel. I felt that if anything could help me overcome the challenges I faced, it would be the gospel. So I began reading the Book of Mormon every night and praying and over the course of two years I learned more and more about the gospel. It wasn't until the end of that two years, however, that I really felt the church was true. One evening a friend bore his testimony of the church, Christ, and the restoration of the fulness of the gospel through the prophet Joseph Smith that I got that sure feeling that vibrated through my whole soul that I knew it was all true. I continue to be a member of the this church and to live the gospel because I know that when I live the principles of the gospel I feel happier and I am able to handle trials and stress better. One lesson from the scriptures that I have seen be true is from 1 Nephi 2:20 in the Book of Mormon which says: "And inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper, and shall be led to a land of promise; yea, even a land which I have prepared for you; yea, a land which is choice above all other lands."

How I live my faith

I think one of the most effective ways I have found to live my faith and what makes me closest to God is through serving others. Whether it be mentoring a group of sixth graders every week or helping others with odd-jobs here and there, these experiences are some of the most fulfilling in my life. Through reading the scriptures and praying every day, I am able to have a more service oriented mindset and am able to better be considerate of what Christ would do in situations I am faced with.

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Jordan Berg
In the temples we make further promises with Heavenly Father after baptism. We can also go there and be baptized in the name of our ancestors so that they who died without a knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ will have an opportunity to accept the saving ordinances of baptism and the Holy Ghost. We can also be sealed (united eternally by the power of God) to our families. To enter into the temple you have to be a baptized member of Christ's restored church and be living worthy of entering into his holy house. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons baptize their new members?

Jordan Berg
Baptism is key to inheriting eternal life. We are baptized to mark a death of our old self and the start of a new life as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Those who are baptized as Christ was by His authority are promised the gift of the Holy Ghost which cleanses us of sin as we follow Christ and keep his commandments and guides us on the path to eternal life. Everyone must be baptized by the priesthood authority He gave his apostles, which was later restored to his prophet Joseph Smith, in order to be prepared to enter back into the presence of Heavenly Father and in order to inherit the kingdom of God, to have eternal life. What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Jordan Berg
When we read scriptures, we are reading the words of Christ. We are reading the things that Christ would be teaching us if he were their personally, the words that he gave his spokesmen, the prophets, to share with us. When I read the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, I am able to feel to feel peace and feel good. From the things I learn when I read I am able to apply that into my own life and be able to be a little more Christ-like and have more happiness in my life. When we read and pray with a sincere heart, real intent, and faith in Christ, Heavenly Father has promised us that he will answer our prayers in a way we can recognize it is from Him so that we can know for ourselves if they are the words of Christ and know for certain it is truth. Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

Jordan Berg
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is consistent. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Jordan Berg
We can do fun, normal stuff, but we live a clean life. A life of peace and happiness. A life of trial, but also a life of experience and joy. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Jordan Berg
Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ have a special purpose, which is: Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the Restored Gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and his Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. They simply share and invite. Then it is up to you to act on what they have taught you and experiment - find out if it is the real deal, if it is really coming from God. But in order to really get that answer, your heart has to be open to the spirit, you have to have a real desire to know if it is the true, be willing to follow that answer, and have the faith that you will get the answer and be willing to try it all out, to live what the missionaries teach you. And if you do all that, you will get an answer by the power of the Holy Ghost and that will change your life for the better. You will come closer to God, you and your family will be blessed. You will have a greater portion of happiness and peace in your life. And if you continue faithful until the end, you will have eternal life. Pretty good deal! Show more Show less
