Hi I'm Deborah

I'm a mother of 4 boys, and we all love the outdoors. My husband and I fell in love on a backpacking trip! I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am like many out there....way too busy. Raising 4 boys, running a reservation business and taking care of the home keep me running. As a family, we take any available opportunity to spend time outdoors, hiking, swimming, mountain biking, skiing, canoeing, or just being outside! Our happiest times as a family are definitely when we are together outdoors, away from media and technology.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into this religion. My parents and grandparents were all members of the LDS church, as were my husband's. I had plenty of experiences early on in my youth that helped me to know this church really is Jesus Christ's church, and His doctrine, but I wasn't sure I wanted to live by the standards the Lord asks. I thought I would be missing out on too much fun if I avoided partying, and other things my friends were into. So I took a break from the church for a couple of years. But the truths I had learned earlier on were powerful, and as I reflected on what I wanted out of life as I hit my 20's, I realized the life I was living away from the church brought me fleeting fun, but definitely not happiness or joy. I changed my life, started getting involved in church again, and studied. Through study and prayer, I felt I should serve as a missionary. I submitted my application, and was sent to Taiwan, where I served for 18 months, sharing the message of the Restoration of Christ's Church with the Taiwanese. That time of my life solidified my testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as I saw lives changed as people accepted the church and became LDS. Since then, my resolve toward living the gospel has strengthened tremendously as I have felt the witness of the Spirit testify repeatedly of the truths I am now living. I could never deny the truths I now know, and pray for the courage to live by them better!

How I live my faith

I am very involved in service to my church. I currently lead the youth group for girls age 12-18. We meet every Sunday for lessons, and on Wednesdays for activities to reinforce the values the girls are striving to develop. We also meet for special activities where youth from larger geographic areas combine, for girls' camp, dances, and service projects for the community. The girls I supervise really teach me as much as I teach them. They are incredible girls with strong resolve to follow Jesus' teachings and remain modest and pure in a world where such ideals are ridiculed. My time with the girls is wonderful, as I don't get much exposure to estrogen in my household of boys -- I have 4 of them! But my main priority is helping my sons understand who they are -- literal children of a Heavenly Father who loves them. As a family, we read scriptures together, study gospel principles, and pray together daily.

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

"Mormon" is simply a nickname given to us by others because of The Book of Mormon. The name of our church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". This reflects our dependence on, and belief in, our Savior Jesus Christ. He is the head of our church, not Mormon or anyone else. Show more Show less
