Hi I'm Merilyn

I enjoy astronomy, handwork and music. I'm a Mom, a wife, a systems analyst and a bookworm. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Reading is my favorite pasttime any genre as long as it's well written. As a mom, I really enjoy finding books that both my daughter and I can share - we have great conversations! I also enjoy playing the piano, guitar, harp and recorder. Physical restrictions have slowed me down, but I love hiking in the mountains. Oh, and astronomy and physics. And handwork. And cooking. And travel. Yes, life is good - always something interesting to do! I work in the computer department at a large manufacturing plant, but if I got to spend my days doing volunteer work, it would be with adult literacy. Oh, and Dr. Who - I love Dr. Who!

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because the gospel is incredibly beautiful and makes such perfect sense. All the answers really are here - not "what should I wear today" or "what should my job be," but all the really big answers, like why we even exist, and what's most important in life. The peace and love I feel from Heavenly Father are truly miraculous. The gospel has taught me and He has shown me that He cares about me, individually and personally, and wants only the best for me.

How I live my faith

I'm currently the president of the local chapter of our women's organization. We organize lessons and music on Sundays, and other activities on weekdays. We might have classes on 1st Aid and CPR, or cake decorating, or retirement planning. We've planted flowers around our building, donated supplies to disaster relief efforts, and supported local woment's shelters and orphanages. We also take meals to new moms and anyone who's ill, and help with housecleaning, babysitting, shopping and pretty much anything a woman needs to do in life. What I've learned most is that these women are awesome friends, who love and watch out for each other, and who have a deep love for the Savior. They really true disciples, living His gospel in these modern days.

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

I guess it's because they don't know any of us personally, and have heard misinformation about the Church and our beliefs. In reality, in an average situation, you'd have a hard time picking us out of the crowd. Yes, we dress modestly, but so do a lot of people. We watch our language, and don't drink alcohol or coffee or use tobacco, but those are lifestyle choices a lot of people make. We share a great many beliefs with all other Christian churches, and we have some doctrinal differences - just like most churches. In my life, I've found those make for wonderful conversations more than problems. I think people might be surprised by how many Mormons they actually do know. If you find some in your circle of friends, ask them questions! We love the gospel, and love to share information about it. My co-workers ask me the most oddball questions about the weirdest rumors they've heard. No, we don't only eat carrots. They also answer my questions about their beliefs. LIke I said, wonderful conversations happen. Show more Show less
