Hi I'm Ryan Duvall

I grew up in Virginia. I love the outdoors. I love airplanes. I am a Computer Geek. I love my family and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love the game of Basketball. I love spending time in the great outdoors, doing things like camping, hiking, biking, swimming, scuba diving, canoeing, and kayaking. I enjoy working with computers and helping other people fix theirs when something goes wrong. I like the challenge of it and the "Eureka!" moment when I figured out the problem and am able to fix it. I also enjoy playing games on the computer because it helps me relax and it allows me to escape to a virtual world where you can do things that you could never do in real life like piloting the Discovery Space Shuttle through its re-entry and landing it. Another one of my passions is flying and airplanes. It amazes me that such a heavy, large mass of metal with engines and wings can soar through the air like it weighs nothing. I often find myself staring out the window the entire flight, even if it is 4 hours long. I like the thrill and the feeling of the powerful jet engines pushing me back in my seat during takeoff. I've never piloted an actual plane before but I have logged many hours on a couple of different flight simulators. I went to college for a year after I graduated from High School with a major of Computer Engineering. I am now serving a Full-time Mission in the Washington Spokane Mission, for two short years.

Why I am a Mormon

Just like every other person that is born on this Earth, I was not born with a knowledge of Jesus Christ. My parents raised me in the LDS faith because it is the religion they know to be true. What parent would not raise their child in a religion they believed to be true with all their heart? I was taught in church and by my parents about Jesus Christ and His gospel. I learned about the Atonement of Jesus Christ that allows all of God's children to repent, so one day we may be found clean and live with God again after we die. I was taught of the Plan of Salvation that God has for all of His children that gives purpose to our lives here on Earth and the Commandments. I learned how Joseph Smith saw God and His Son Jesus Christ and was chosen by them to be a prophet through whom God would restore His church once again to the Earth. I was taught that by the gift and power of God, Joseph Smith translated an ancient record on gold plates into a book we now know as the Book of Mormon. As I attended church I felt something that I hadn't felt before. I realized that I felt the Holy Spirit. Growing up I relied on my parents' testimony but when I was about 16 years old, I wondered if all I had been taught was really true. I had read the Book of Mormon before, but I had read it without real intent. I decided to not just read it, but to study the Book of Mormon. As I read it through again, I began with a prayer and as I read, I had a prayer in my heart to know if it was true. I read every page of the Book of Mormon and I believed that it could be true. It seemed impossible to me that anyone could translate that book, in less than three months, without the power of God. One night, I got down on my knees, and I prayed to my loving Heavenly Father and I asked Him if Joseph Smith was a Prophet and if the Book of Mormon was true. I am a Mormon today, because God answered my prayer and told me, through His Holy Spirit, that Joseph was a prophet and that the Book of Mormon is true.

How I live my faith

Currently, I live my faith by serving the Lord as a Full-Time Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Serving a mission was not always in my plans however. There was a time in my life when I was younger and I made some mistakes, as everyone does. I noticed that I couldn't feel the Spirit except on rare occasion. I felt that I had grown distant from my Heavenly Father. I realized that these mistakes had made me unhappy and I wanted to change. The only problem was that I was not sure how to go about it. I wasn't sure if there was a God, mostly because I had separated myself from Him and I hadn't seen His hand in my life. It took some time until I noticed the promptings of the Holy Ghost while I attended church and other things. The Spirit brought to my remembrance the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This thought gave me hope that I could change and be forgiven. I began changing my life and as I did, I drew closer to my Heavenly Father and my unhappiness was replaced with happiness and joy. I have felt the awesome power of the Atonement in my life as my Savior took upon himself my burdens. I have felt the love and the peace that comes with repentance. It's never too late to change and God is waiting for us to call for help. I am eternally thankful for my Savior and for the Atonement that he has provided for all of his children. Without it, there would be no hope in this world. It is because of this experience that I chose to serve a full-time mission. I have seen the blessings in my life that come from living the Gospel of Jesus Christ and I want to share this with others so it can bless their lives as well. There are so many who are looking for something that will improve their lives but they don't know what they are looking for. I live my faith by helping people improve their lives by inviting them to come unto Christ and receive the happiness, joy, and love that comes into one's life as they accept and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
