Hi I'm Laura

I'm a wife, mother, reader, gardener, chef, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Background: I am a wife to—arguably--the best husband and father in the world. I am a mother to five beautiful and sticky (at least most of the time!) little kids. I am a daughter to two great parents. I am a sister to five awesome brothers (aren’t I lucky?) and one tough sister. I am a daughter of Heavenly parents who love me. Things I love: The ocean: crashing waves, skittering crabs, colorful starfish, soft sand, smooth rocks, bald eagles, sea stacks. Food: pancakes, whole grains, cookbooks, dinner with family, watching bread dough come together, fluffy egg whites, juicy fruit, crisp vegetables, new recipes, homemade desserts, custard ice cream. Genealogy: birth and marriage records, census records, names and dates, old pictures, obituaries, pedigree charts, family group sheets, journals. Outside: forests, lakes, the sky, hiking, tents, stars, animals, mountains, strong legs, maps, new places. Kids: pitter-patter of feet, “mom! Look what I found!,” hugs, laughing smiles, quick to forgive, full of love, little toes. Books: Little House in the Big Woods, Ella Enchanted, Jane Eyre, Bleak House, Treasure Island, Bonds That Make Us Free, Hinds Feet on High Places, The Empty Pot, When Dinosaurs came with Everything, Room on the Broom, Flotsom, Pancakes for Supper, Mother Goose, The Day the Babies Crawled Away. Other: colorful quilts, Mormon tabernacle choir, a freshly swept floor, green grass, high-flying swings, cherished friends.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents and grandparents are Mormons, so I was taught about Jesus Christ and his teachings when I was young. I’ve always loved the principles of the gospel and tried to follow the commandments of God. As I’ve done this, I’ve learned for myself the true doctrine of Christ—just as Jesus promised in John 7:17, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” Being a Mormon gives my life direction, peace, and purpose beyond my own self. It gives me tools and skills to succeed in my marriage and as a mother. As I see my young children learn, understand, and apply the teachings of Jesus Christ, it is a witness to me that his teachings are true, and we will be happier when we follow him.

How I live my faith

My faith is in Jesus Christ—that because of his atonement, if I repent and try again—he will make me whole, and give me strength beyond my own to fulfill the commandments he has given. So, I live that faith by trying again each new day to do better than the day before, identifying mistakes, and praying for strength to overcome. I live my faith by serving. Serving my family, my neighbors, my church members, and my community. I have found what Jesus said to be true, “whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” (Matthew 16:25) The Mormon Church gives ample opportunity to help others, which in turn helps me to learn more about Jesus Christ, and gives him the opportunity to change my heart to be full of love for him and for my neighbor.
