Hi I'm Tom

I am a researcher who uses technology to solve problems. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm an Information Systems professor who is passionate about teaching and who loves to discover new knowledge to address complex problems. I'm also an avid software engineer who likes to use technology to solve problems. I am an expert in deception detection, large group collaboration, and software and testing methodologies and approaches. I'm an optimist that believes there is a tremendous amount of good in the world. I believe that one person can make a difference. I'm a husband to a wonderful woman and a proud father of five children who are growing up faster than I can believe.

Why I am a Mormon

As a researcher and a scientist I like to run experiments which require me to gather data in support of testing a hunch or hypothesis. This innate desire to discover new knowledge for myself extends beyond my vocation, it pervades my faith. I love that as a Mormon I can put the principles of the gospel to the test. I love that God gives me very specific evidence to my questions and problems. I love that I can go to my Heavenly Father and ask a question and that I can receive a response through thoughts in my mind and feelings in my heart as to what I should or maybe shouldn't do. Over the years I have put principles of the gospel to the test or in other words I have experimented with them. I am convinced, based on the consistent evidence, that we have a loving Heavenly Father who has given us a plan that if we will follow it will allow us to one day return to live with Him. He knows us and he knows our current situation. He wants the best for us. He wants us to be happy. I know that if we will follow his plan i.e., keep his commandments that we will be happy, not only here in this life, but also as we return to live with Him in our Heavenly home.

How I live my faith

We live in the information age and its no surprise that there are so many channels of information that are part of our daily lives. Now, is like no other time in the history of the world. This ubiquity of and access to information is fundamentally changing how we work, socialize, and interact. Right now I have the great opportunity to work with the youth of my local congregation. While there are many challenges that youth face, there are so many opportunities. Helping them to see their potential and the way that they can positively impact the lives of others as they live as Jesus would have them live is one of my primary focuses. They are good and have so much potential. The gospel helps them to see what is possible and how they can find what will truly make them happy.

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

I have found that the best way to know our Heavenly Father or His son Jesus Christ is to serve others. I believe helping others out allows us to see the good in them, the good that our Heavenly Father sees. When we are too focused on our selves, we cripple our vision. By doing what Christ would do serving others we begin to know our Father in Heaven. Show more Show less
