Hi I'm Eli

I'm a nerd. I play guitar. I love tennis, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a graduate student studying Mechanical Engineering. I enjoy tennis (both playing and watching), boomeranging, teasing my roommates, snowboarding and basically anything musical. I like controlling my life in small subtle ways, for instance, I tend to order the same foods from the same places. I'm not what I would call a bookworm, but when I find a book I like, it's hard to get me to do much else. I like to think of myself as a normal kind of guy, but sometimes I think too much.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up surrounded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints. Both of my parents were like that too - and all four of my grandparents. So talk of missions, Sunday school, tithing, Book of Mormon prophets and even green jello has enveloped my as long as I can remember. Why I am a Mormon, however, has much less to do with my upbringing as it does with my spiritual convictions. If I had not felt the way I have about all the little pieces of my testimony - I would have wandered from the Church long ago. That's the beauty of it: Heavenly Father doesn't expect us to blindly follow Him or His teachings. He gives us assurances that what we're doing is in line with eternal truth. I am a Mormon because I have felt the truth of the Church by the Holy Ghost. It echoes within my soul, and gives me hope that I'm progressing my character one small step at a time. I know that my progression is sanctioned by eternal law, and that is why I feel good about the truth of what I'm doing and why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I live in a Young Single Adult (YSA) ward. And if it weren't for my ward and my institute classes on campus - I would only be surrounded by engineers! No offense to my profession, but we're not exactly known for being social or having fun. I participate in my ward by attending meetings where it is my calling to take notes and follow up with people. I also participate by socializing with other members of my ward throughout the week. I live my faith personally by reading the words of prophets both in the scriptures and in modern day talks. When I really study and ponder the teachings of Christ, I feel an urge to improve myself and I make goals to become better or to focus on one trait for a week. This week, I've been pondering how well our Heavenly Father knows what is going on in each of our lives, and why we so often get distracted of that truth. It's a good one to ponder a bit. :)

What is the First Vision?

The First Vision is something really amazing that happened in 1820. God the Father and the Resurrected Jesus Christ came to visit a boy named Joseph Smith Jr. They came in answer to a fervent prayer he gave. Joseph had a question about which teachings were true. In the First Vision - God the Father introduced Jesus Christ as His "beloved son". Jesus Christ answered Joseph's question and called him to be a prophet to restore the truth that was lost since the days when Christ himself walked the earth.  Show more Show less
