Hi I'm Joseph

I was born in Utah, but raised in Alaska. I work at a national science lab.

About Me

I am married, and we have three children, a son and two daughters. I recently finished a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, and I now work for a national laboratory. I enjoy reading and movies. I'm also an amateur astronomer, and own two telescopes. For exercise I like to do weight lifting, and go on occasional hikes.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents are both Mormons, and I was raised in the church. As a teenager I rebelled against the teachings of my parents because I felt they were too restrictive. However, soon after leaving home, I felt that something was missing. I wasn't happy or satisfied with my life, but I sensed that perhaps what the church was teaching might be what I needed and I only needed to apply those teachings in my life. I chose to give it a try, and I began to earnestly study the Book of Mormon and other teachings of the church, and not only that, but to apply them in my life. It didn't take long before something amazing happened: The Spirit of God visited me in my heart and convinced me that these things were true. My soul was filled with a happiness and a joy that is inexplicable and impossible to describe except to those who have experienced it. My heart was changed after that, I was personally converted, and knew that I had found the true path of happiness. I now know that we have a living prophet on earth today, that he communicates with God, and that if we follow his teachings then we can be kept safe from many of the difficulties and challenges our world is experiencing in this age. I also know that Jesus Christ lived a mortal life, died on the cross, and was then resurrected so that we can all one day be cleansed from our sins, be resurrected ourselves, and return to live with God, if we will only obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

In the past I haves served extensively in the church with the little children, such as teaching Sunday School to children, and helping with the Cub Scout program. Recently I was asked to help some of the church units in outlying areas. I visit them regularly to teach them, and especially to check on the welfare of the members. I enjoy this because I get to meet so many wonderful people, and to see the personal sacrifices each of them makes as they try to follow the teachings of Jesus. One of the most important responsibilities I feel as a Mormon is the need to teach my own children about the Gospel and the Plan of Salvation. As a family, we read from the holy scriptures regularly, and talk about what they mean. We also get together once a week to have a family Gospel lesson, and to enjoy each others' company. We call this Family Home Evening. It has been a great blessing to our family, and it has given me great happiness to see my own children discover God for themselves, and to see them build their own personal relationship with him.
