Hi I'm Jeff

I grew up as a Baptist in Richmond, VA. I was baptized a Mormon while serving in the US Navy.

About Me

I am a husband and a father of four children and grandfather of three grandchildren. I grew up in Richmond, Virginia USA not knowing one thing about the Mormon faith but having parents who nurtured within me a belief in Jesus Christ. Currently I am a business manager at a small company that sells neuroscience research equipment. I enjoy reading nonfiction, history and being in the outdoors. I also enjoy going on dates with my wife and being around family. I especially like to sit out on the back porch during the summer. I have always enjoyed the entrepreneurial challenge of starting a new company, of pioneering new things. There are many ways we can be pioneers in this world and one of the pioneering paths for me was to join the LDS Church. I have been to many places including Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, India, the Caribbean, Brazil, Italy, Greece, and other places. I especially like to explore the USA as there is so much to see and learn. I also enjoy sports and scuba diving.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 18 and between high school and entering the Navy, I traveled from Virginia to Grand Teton National Park and got a job in the park. While there I met some young people who I enjoyed being around. It turned out that they were members of a church that I knew nothing about, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. What immediately impressed me was how happy they were. Another thing that greatly impressed me was that when Sunday came around they went to church! I thought it incredible that they would go to church when there was so much fun stuff to do at the national park and no parents to help them make their decision. I began asking about their faith. I found it quite different and strange yet their example of choosing the right was the biggest sermon they preached. We were friends for the summer and got together every day. One evening, after reading the story of Joseph Smith, I decided I wanted to know if the story was true and if the Book of Mormon was true. I would read at night while in my dorm room. This one evening I made the short hike atop nearby Lunchtree Hill, found what I considered a grove of trees, and knelt down to pray. I cried unto my Father in Heaven to let me know, and I waited for angels to appear. Well, they didn't but a feeling of such happiness came over me that I just knew that the answer to my prayer was yes, the Book of Mormon was true. No one had told me what to expect, so I expected angels. I didn't even know that missionaries existed; I just had my LDS friends and their examples. Regardless of what I didn't know, what I felt that evening was a feeling of joy and confirmation that never left me. Later that fall I entered the US Navy as a nuclear electrician and spent six years learning about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I thank the Lord for such a beautiful answer to an innocent prayer.

How I live my faith

Today I attend church each week with my wife and family. I pray each morning and evening and I daily read and study the Bible and Book of Mormon. The patterns of daily prayer and reading, studying and meditating on the things of God have changed me in a way that no other thing in this life has been able to do. I love to read the scriptures each day and I have had many witnesses of God answering my many prayers. I try to live my faith by seeking the Holy Ghost, by trying to always choose the right, by trying to be honest, and by trying to be kind. I try to live my faith by going to church and loving my family. I just try to live honestly and with integrity. I also live my faith by enjoying the beauty of nature, God's creations. God talks to us through nature. I am grateful to Him for how this is done. I also have lived my faith by serving as a young missionary in the Osaka, Japan area. That experience changed my life and became the foundation for the future. I had met my wife in the Church's missionary training center and later, my career path started with a job at General Motors where I had responsibility for growing sales in Japan!

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Reading the scriptures is probably the most life changing habit (combined with prayer) that has come into my life. The inspirations, the answers to prayer, the moments of communing with God, and the experience over the years of learning about God has been the best thing that has happened to me. I am so grateful for the scriptures and for the Spirit's help to continue reading over the years. What an amazing gift God has given. There was a time when I heard one of the prophets, I think it may have been President Benson but I am not sure. Regardless, the message was made that the Book of Mormon has the answers to every problem life has to offer. I was skeptical and unsure but today I have no doubt about that the Book of Mormon does hold the answer to all of life's challenges, and taken together the entire set of scriptures paint the most beautiful canvas of a plan of salvation for the world.
