Hi I'm Marianne

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Marianne. I am a missionary for the church and serving in New York City. Before my mission I taught fifth grade and loved it. I enjoy friends, taking photos and reading a great book. I want to spend my life doing things that are meaningful and making a difference.

Why I am a Mormon

I remember the very first time I was asked the question, "Why are you a Mormon". A close family friend wanted to know why I still follow the church that my parents go to. He followed the question up with another, "Do you not make your own choices?". These are real questions that I have been asked over and over again as I have grown up. The answer that I gave that close family friend is the same one that I will give to you today. I looked him in the eyes and said I do make my own choices.I am not a Mormon just because that is what my parents believe and I am an obedient daughter. I am not a Mormon because I am too lazy or complacent to find a new religion. I am not a Mormon because I have friends at church or, because it is comfortable to me. I continue to go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because I know it is true. I have tested the words of the prophets both latter day and those in the past, and I have come to know it is true. It took him a back that I could be so bold, however It is the truth. I am a Mormon, because I believe.

How I live my faith

As a mormon it is important to me to do more than just believe. I try and live my religion every day in all that I do. One small part of living my religion is going to church and holding a calling. Every member has a job in the church to help it run smoothly I have held many calling including teaching, organizing events, and serving sisters in my congregation. Other ways that I live my faith are serving those around me. I also live my faith by making it a part of my every day life by reading scriptures and praying daily.

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

Marianne
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Church of Christ. We have his name in the title because we believe in and follow his teachings. Mormons believe the bible is key to helping understand the nature of Christ and his church. The Book of Mormon does not contradict the Bible or replace it in our religion. We believe that the witness of the Book of Mormon added with the Bible together are stronger then just having one. It is just like the words of Matthew, Mark, and John work together in portraying an accurate image of Christ the Book of Mormon, and Bible go hand in hand to help us understand, God, Christ, and our Religion. How can we stop the spread and influence of pornography?

Marianne
One way that I try to stop the spread and influence of pornography is by being modest and covering up. This may not seem like a small or worthless thing, however I have been told by several young men of the difference that it makes. When a man sees a women dressed inappropriately his thoughts can go to pornographic material seen in the past or be turned on and have the desire to see more. I want to do anything I can to help the men stay strong and worthy. Show more Show less

What is the difference between attending church and the temple?

Marianne
For Latter-day saints church is for public worship. It is a place where members come together and strengthen each other by studying the words of Christ and partake of the sacrament. It is something which any person on earth regardless of age or religion can go and be enriched. For Latter-day saints the temple is a very special place which we prepare all of our younger years to enter. With-in the walls of the temple sacred ordinances help us to be able to return to our Heavenly Father and to reach our full potential. It is a private place where only members who have prepared their life to live the commandments given to use can enter. The reason for the privacy is for two main reasons. The first is that, because of the important and sacred nature of what happens with-in the temple it must be protected and saved for those who have proven worthy. Second, is that in the temple we make very important covenants (or promises) with the Lord. They are important and should only be made by those who have completely prepared themselves to enter and live those covenants for the rest of their lives. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Marianne
It is important to realize that Mormon missionaries are not paid for their work. This means they don't contact you to fill a quota or get a commission. They do it to teach you about a religion that has brought joy and peace to their life. When they teach you they will focus on the role that the savior can play in our life. They will help you understand how drawing near to Jesus Christ will give you purpose, joy, and peace in a shifting and changing world. Most importantly they will teach you how to someday return to our Heavenly Father. Show more Show less

Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

Marianne
Imagine that while driving down the freeway that someone who is in a normal car and clothing pulls you over and tries to pull you over and ask for money for speeding. You would not pay them because who are they that they can pull you over? It comes down to have the proper authority (or power) to enforce laws. Normal people are not given the right to enforce the laws, thankfully, so we would not have to listen to them if they did. Being baptized by someone with authority is a similar experience. God has given power to men on earth. This power is called the priesthood and it was restored to Joseph Smith by John the Baptist and Peter, James, and John men whom received the Priesthood from Christ himself. Since then the Priesthood has been passed to worth males in our church who are worthy and old enough to receive it. It is through this proper authority that members of our religion are baptized.
