Hi I'm Denise

I grew up in West Virginia. After college I joined the church in Louisiana. I'm a Mormon mom living in California.

About Me

I have 3 daughters, remarried in 2001, and have 3 stepsons. I have worked for the past 33 years as an engineer in the refining business; I am retiring soon and will be serving a mission with my husband in the Caribbean. I am a member of a very active book club and I also love to travel, walk our dog, and run the occasional 5k/10k/half marathon race.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up very active in the Methodist church and had a wonderful father and mother who taught me about God and Jesus Christ. When I first began work after college, I attended a Bible study group during lunch time. One member of the group, noticing that I was interested in religion, began to share with me principles of the LDS church and gave me a Book of Mormon. He then offered to have members of his church give me free lessons. Being open minded and interested in learning new things, I said sure!. Two sister missionaries arrived at my door and began teaching me things that answered questions I had about the gospel. I used my Bible to cross-reference and study the teachings they shared and I began reading the Book of Mormon my friend had given me. I prayed earnestly to know if the things they were teaching were true. Another friend from work tried to show me that what they were saying was false and that it was a cult. However as I later sincerely and fervently prayed about what this friend had said and what the missionaries had taught, I received a confirmation that the LDS principles were true and that what I was learning was a fullness of the gospel. I chose to be baptized and become a member of the LDS church. Line upon line have been added to my understanding and being a member has brought me blessings and protected me from many tragedies that exist in the world today. This church is true!

How I live my faith

I am actively involved in building up the kingdom of God on earth. For a start, I live my faith by trying to make my home a piece of heaven on earth. After that, I build up and strengthen those in my ward who need help by providing food or rides or a listening ear. I am involved in visiting teaching, a program where a companion and I visit 2 to 3 other women each month and help them out in their times of need (new baby, death in the family, financial hardship, feeling alone). For many years, I have worked with the young women of the church by planning annual youth conferences and camps, monthly dances, and Sunday evening meetings with inspirational speakers and music. I have also worked with the 3-12 year old children as their Sunday music leader. I teach them gospel songs like "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus" that help to build their spiritual foundation. I provide music on the piano or organ for church meetings. I recently began working in our beautiful LDS temple in the hills of Oakland, California. In a few months, my husband and I will be missionaries in the Caribbean, providing support for the younger missionaries and spreading the gospel of joy in this region for 2 years.
