Hi I'm Matthew

A helpful husband, fantastic father, conscientious contributor and determined disciple of Christ.

About Me

With the love and support of my wife and daughters, life is an adventure, full of happy shared experiences. We love to meet new people and get to know them. My wife often knows just what to say to freshen up my perspective and motivate me to make necessary changes in the way I do things. Our daughters are expert in the art of shuffling onto our knees with a book and asking us with pleading eyes to read to them! As an outstanding student with a fighting spirit from a modest background, I earned a degree in computer science from Cambridge University. I am now self employed as a consultant software engineer. I compete aggressively while obeying rules and encouraging friendly competitors. While at college, at a time when I couldn't afford to repair my bicycle or purchase a pair of trainers, I started running to lectures and laboratory assignments in an old pair of hard-soled sandals. The next summer, I ran a 1500m (one mile) race against some friends whilst wearing my sandals, and beat them all by a significant margin! I am interested in almost everything—my interests used to be dominated by the technical sciences but have since broadened to include the humanities.

Why I am a Mormon

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." — John 8:32. As a child, I was taught the gospel of Jesus Christ and considered the subject deeply and prayerfully. I realised that the gospel is the one true source of hope in the world, since nothing else can relieve the anguish of deceased loved ones or reunite us with them, nothing else can cure many human ailments, nothing else can answer the ultimate questions of life, and nothing apart from the Gospel of Jesus Christ can offer us any prospect of an eternal legacy. Jesus Christ can do all of these things. I hoped that the gospel message was accurate and felt anxious to find out for myself whether I could safely build my life on its principles. I was baptised and confirmed in faith at eight years old, on which occasion I felt the Holy Spirit without fully understanding what I was experiencing. Despite not receiving a clear and immediate answer to my prayers, I earnestly tried to please God by the way I lived and frequently prayed and fasted for guidance on the questions most central to my quest for truth. One winter evening at the age of fourteen, whilst reading the scriptures privately in my bedroom, I was suddenly and unexpectedly filled with an intense feeling of God's pure love and a sense of his transcending power. In that instant I knew by revelation from God through the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Holy Bible is a true record of Christ's mortal ministry in the Old World and the Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith from ancient records of God's work in the Americas. The gospel of Jesus Christ helps me to live a freer and happier life.

How I live my faith

I teach Youth Sunday School, and consider this to be a great honour. My students attend classes with an attitude of reverence, and with surprisingly mature perspectives on life and the gospel. I feel that my calling is a sacred trust from God, and I prepare my lessons accordingly. The years approaching adulthood are naturally a time of substantial adjustment and maturation, so I help the youth to build a secure foundation for major life choices through the study and application of Christ's example and teachings.

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Christ showed us the way to love unconditionally, forgive those who have offended us, and keep covenants of fidelity. He taught us to live lives of integrity whilst showing respect, kindness and understanding for the legitimate perspectives of other people. Whether our family members are chosen or inherited, regardless of what stage we are at in courtship, and whether in purely platonic friendship or in filial affection; sincere application of the principles Christ taught can help enhance any relationship.
