Hi I'm Alicia

I'm a missionary. I'm a college student. I'm an artist. I'm a teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college student. I have gone to school for three years as an art major and in the last school year found a greater calling in life: teaching. Through many months of guidance by the Spirit, I found myself in a Special Needs Institute class. At the same time, I found myself enrolled in a Special Education class. These amazing people helped me find myself and realize that helping them and teaching them was what I needed to realize more happiness than I could ever find as an art major. Now, I am preparing to serve a mission. I have been called to serve in the Nashville Tennessee area. My real learning begins as I leave my home, step out of my comfort zone and prepare to help the amazing people of that area. I can't wait for the next 18 months of my life to prepare me for the opportunities I will have as a future teacher and a future mother.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been a member my whole life, but when I was 15 years old, I wondered if everything I had been taught really was true. At this point in my life, I was in a horrible depression. I had been a victim of sexual abuse and was trying to recover. Feeling God's love was extremely difficult and I doubted my belief. One night, I was frustrated that I hadn't felt God in my life so I kneeled down and sincerely prayed to Him for help. As I began to pour out my heart to the Lord aloud, I began to cry. I hadn't been able to feel anything but anger for months and I hadn't been able to cry. But just then, tears flowed freely. I cried and prayed to feel peace and the love of God. Suddenly, like a warm blanket being wrapped around me, my sorrows were swept away and peace filled my soul. I knew God loved me. I know He still does and He loves all of His children. I began to cry harder, but no longer because of sadness. I cried tears of joy to finally feel free of my depression and hurt. From that moment on, I have seen the hand of God everyday of my life. I know this gospel is true. It has brought me so much happiness. I know God loves me. That is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

Since I am a college student, I have the opportunity to be involved in all sorts of church and institute activities. I have participated in choirs, been in leadership positions, been taught by my peers, have played the organ for my ward and been the ward family history coordinator. But it is the little day-by-day activities that really make all the difference. Every day I read my scriptures and pray. As I walk on campus, I try to smile at everyone that passes by and share with them a little bit of the happiness that I feel because of God's love for me. Helping others is really important to me. Especially with my roommates. Everyday I try to find a way to serve them- even if it means just washing the dishes. I participate in Family Home Evening with my apartment family. I love being involved with the church and I love living the gospel. Now, as a recently called missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have found the best way to live my faith is to share it. In the past month as I have spent more time studying the scriptures, opportunities to share my beliefs have presented themselves in many ways. I have been able to teach people about Joseph Smith, the Mormon pioneers and the restoration of the church. I live my faith by preparing to serve full-time as a missionary for the church.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Alicia
Missionaries go out to teach the gospel because they have faith and testimony that what they are teaching is true. And they want everyone around them to find that happiness too. They know that God loves all of His children and they want them to feel of His love. Show more Show less

What is faith?

Alicia
Faith is the belief or hope you have in Christ. It is what strengthens us when nothing else will. It is knowing that no matter what situation or circumstance we find ourselves in that God loves us and He has a plan for us. It is simple but firm like knowing the sun will rise day after day. That is faith. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

Alicia
Everyday when I walk home from my classes, I look up at the trees and the mountains. I look at the beautiful flowers that grow around me. I look at the birds as they sing in the treetops. Everything around me tells me there is a God. The beauty of the world shows me He loves me. Show more Show less
