Hi I'm Jay

I joined the church when I was in high school in Seattle. My mom tried to save me from joining. But - Guess What?

About Me

I’m a high school teacher in the Las Vegas area - Henderson, NV. I teach students with special needs. I have a Masters degree in Special Education and have been teaching for more than forty years. I have also taught math and science in three different states and even overseas in Germany for one year for the Department of Defense. For hobbies I’ve had an amateur radio license for more that fifty years (call sign now W7KBH), but I rarely use it now. But, I still maintain two Internet servers that other “Hams” use with VOIP to do Emergency Communications. I got involved with EM Comm back in 2004 just after the Dec. 26th Tsunami hit; caused by a powerful 9.1 earthquake in SE Asia. I set up a website to help friends and relatives of victims try to locate their loved ones. Along with more than a dozen other hams in a number of countries around the world we set up a 24/7 EM Comm Internet VOIP communication system that lasted several months. My renewed hobby is sailing and I've completed my sailing certificate for Bearboat Cruising. I would love to spend a year sailing around the Caribbean with my wife of 30 years. We have six children; one works for an airline so we get free flying privileges – but, I’ve spent a number of nights sleeping in airports waiting for the next “free” flight; three are married, one is still going to college in Hotel Management. I hope she gets her degree so we can get “cheap” hotels too. Our youngest is in Afganistan in the Big Red One - Army Infantry.

Why I am a Mormon

As a kid my mom would send me to the Baptist church down the street with my sister, but never went with us. We were both baptized as Baptists back in the 50's. I'm a Mormon today because when I went to check out the church as a teenager my mother insisted that she go with me so I didn't get involve with some cult. Sure enough she felt the spirit and recognized the truth when she heard it - so we were both baptized. My father and my sister (then married) never have joined the church. My father passed away in 1999 without ever joining. But, now that my mom is in heaven - I'm sure he has accepted the gospel.

How I live my faith

Forty years ago I was drinking and driving a motorcycle and not being active in church for more than ten years. As a result I lost a leg below the knee but that still didn’t stop my drinking for three more years. My mother was the only other church member in our family. I believe to this day that it was because of her prayers that I was able to go back to the church and become active again. Since then I met my wife and we have been sealed to each other for time and all eternity. I can testify that the Lord loves me and he loves every single soul on this earth. I wouldn’t trade the knowledge I have gained about the fullness of the gospel in the last 30 years for anything. My wife and I were Ward Missionaries for a year and we were excited about the opportunities that church members can have sharing their lives and experiences in this Great work; to spread the gospel to all the world - especially over the Internet. Of all the things I’ve ever done - the greatest accomplishment I have ever had was to be able to truthfully say – to the world - “I’m a Mormon!” No joy will ever be greater! Except when I meet my mother - LaVerne "Joy" again in the kingdom of our Heavenly Father.
