Hi I'm Lafe

I'm a graduate student in cancer biology and I'm a sportswritter. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Between working on my Ph.D. and writting about college football, I keep plenty busy! I'm self proclaimed mad scientist and an avid college sports fan. I do a little stand-up comedy now and again. I like life, and currently it is good.

Why I am a Mormon

I am fortunate to have loving parents who taught my siblings and I the Gospel from as long as I can remember. They get lion's share of the credit for who I am today in every aspect of my life. To talk about why I am Mormon without first recognizing them first would be amiss. One of the main reason why I'm a Mormon is the Book of Mormon. I remember reading it as a boy on my bunk bed when I was about 8 or 9. I didn't really understand a lot of what was in the book because it was well over my head, but I knew that it was what I was supposed to do. When I came to the close of that wonderful book, I did what millions of other had done before and what many shall do afterwards: I took up the matter with God. I felt a calming reassurance that it was true. Since that time I have read the Book of Mormon many times. I am always surprised by the different aspects of the book that I hadn't noticed before. I understand better now than I did when I was 9 what the book is about. It is about who Jesus Christ is and how we can come unto Him. It is a book that brings peace to my heart as I read it. I know that it is what it claims to be: an ancient record brought to us by the power of God. One of the great messages of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is that things like revelations from God still happen every day, and that all can receive communication from God if they just seek it out. I know I've received revelation from God as many times as I've asked for it. And really, that how I know what I know. It's why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

Right now I work in the local family history library once a month, and it's amazing! Finding out about those who came before is really cool, and so is helping others to do the same! And this service is available to anyone who wants to come and find out a bit more about their family tree. We have what we call family home evening as a group. As a church we have been asked to meet together as families one night a week. Since a lot of us young single adults are away from our families, we meet together as a group once a week, often in the house of a family that is kind enough to host us. We always have some sort of lesson and discussion about a Gospel topic, then we just have fun and enjoy each other's company. It's great!
