Hi I'm Melissa

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a graduate of a major state University with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Sciences. I currently work as an Early Head Start Preschool Teacher. I love my job and strive everyday to better the lives of the children I serve. I enjoy hanging out with my nephews and niece and watching movies with them. In the Spring I love going to the park to sit on the grass and read. When time permits, I love to take a car trip to cities I have yet to explore.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I was born into a family that made the church available to me while I grew up in Los Angeles, CA, I did not fully understand the gospel nor have a complete testimony until I became more independent. While I was in college I became an active member of the church. I made a point to attend meetings at a family ward where my sister and her family attended and then attended at an YSA branch that was formed nearby. At first solely for the purpose of a parking pass to the University, I attended institute. However, I came to love the building that was filled by the spirit when my life was in stress. I found peace as I began to study the stories of the scriptures that many of which I had never heard while I was growing up. I began to ponder the teachings of the Prophets and related the doctrine of the church to my struggles as a full-time student with a full-time job. It was the power of the gospel that helped me in my everyday life. It was during this time as a student I learned to pray to my Father for help and lean to him for understanding in my life. I began to relate the gospel to my major (Child and Family Studies), and find the importance of a functional family that leans on faith. Even to this day I desire this more than anything since this was something I was not accustomed to while growing up. Through study and prayer, I came to understand the goodness and peace found in the Plan of Salvation, or Plan of Happiness, and came to know that it was through this path I can once again return to my loving Father in Heaven. I found a great love for my Savior, Jesus Christ as I grew to know him and know that through his Grace we can be made whole. Even though I did not have a family of support, I began to lean on the words of the gospel for comfort and find safety among members of the church. While I struggled with family problems that were buried for years upon years and finally broke to the surface during this time, I found myself craving peace and comfort. I gained a testimony in the power of the Priesthood and the blessings of comfort and aid that were given to me by my closest friends, mouthpieces of the Lord. I spent countless nights reading specifically the trials and tribulations of Joseph Smith in The Doctrine and Covenants and came to love the man who restored the Lord’s Church to this earth. As I read the words from the chapters of the Doctrine and Covenants, as well as many other books from the scriptures, I began to read them as if they were written to me as a scared girl who felt alone in these latter days. Through the Spirit, I felt peace from our Father’s words to Joseph. Also, it was by The Holy Ghost that I learned of the things I needed to do to be happy. I grew to love Joseph Smith and found respect in him for the marvelous works he did during such tribulation. Even though my years of an undergraduate student are over, the lessons I learned and the Testimony I gained during those four years have aided me and helped me rejoice in the knowledge I have of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church. As still a young girl in her early twenties who has overcome many trials in her early years with the aid of our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ, I strive to live my life according to the teachings of The Gospel. There are always more trials to overcome; however through these trials are lessons and more knowledge gained. Although I am far from perfect, I work every day to become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. I have come to understand that through the tedious and mundane things in life, as well as the hardships and trials we are made stronger. It is through the knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that I can continue to get the help I need to press forward in my life. Prayer and Scripture study are simple, but by doing such I have grown closest to my Father in Heaven. I know that by repentance and the Grace of our Savior I can be spotless before the Lord and it is by following Christ and the words of the Prophets that I can one day return to our Father and receive the glories of Heaven.

How I live my faith

My faith shapes who I am and what I stand for. I strive to be an example to those around me while living a life as a witness to the truthfulness of the gospel. I live every day to make it better for someone else. I have had the wonderful blessing of being able to try to make difference in the lives I serve in my work. By working with others from other faiths and Christian denominations, I am able to see the good in all people and witness the love our Father has for all his children on earth. I am so thankful for the knowledge of the fullness of the gospel and the blessings I have gain from this knowledge in my life.
