Hi I'm Mel

I'm a lifelong member of the LDS Church and trying to be more like Jesus Christ every day.

About Me

A husband of 37+ years and father of 8, I enjoy family life. A mission to Indonesia in my youth encouraged me to enjoy things Asian, so I took my wife and 3 children to China in 2010. An MBA I biked to work for 30 years at a major oil company before retiring in 2009. Almost daily basketball is my current exercise routine. Having lived in Utah, New Zealand, Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Texas, we now reside in Oklahoma, but enjoy travel whenever opportunities come up. I read for pleasure, information, and stimulation from different types of literature.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents taught me the principles of Mormonism from my youth and encouraged me to follow Jesus Christ's example. I have received answers to prayers many times and notably answers regarding key principles such as the Book of Mormon and whether the lifestyle of the Church is right for me. In 1979 as a missionary in Singapore I felt the Book of Mormon was true, but I needed a spiritual witness of its truefulness. So I made a concerted effort to read, study, ponder and pray for such a testimony. I remember kneeling by my bedside and receiving that spiritual witness. In addition I have tried to live the lifestyle encouraged by the Church and find great blessings in my life from doing so. Inevitably when I follow the counsel of living prophets I find my life is better off. When I listen to what the prophets counsel and try to do it, I find that usually I can and my life is better. For example, a few years ago I heard counsel to get out of debt. We worked out a plan and paid off our mortgage over a 3.5 year period. A year or so later I moved because of work, but the stress of not having to make extra house payments was a great blessing to my family. I love the Lord and His church. This influence encouraged us to have 8 children and then gave us good counsel and a support structure to raise them. Although I'm not wealthy, I do feel that we are living the abundant life because of the blessings of being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

How I live my faith

I have enjoyed being an active church member for my entire life with many years of scouting and youth support leadership positions. As volunteer coordinator for the Special Olympics in NE Oklahoma helped ensure young people had opportunities for service. Currently serving as a fulltime missionary bound for Magelang Indonesia.
