Hi I'm Blake

I have a wonderful family. I love to teach. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am born and raised in Houston, TX. I thought the whole world was hot and humid like Houston. I later found out that I needed to learn more about the world. I have been able to live in South America for two years and studied abroad in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. I recently traveled to Paris with my wife and to Shanghai, China. These experiences helped me to know there are wonderful people all over the world and that America is truly a blessed land of opportunity. I love to cook. I get it from my mom. She was a caterer when I was young and I would work for her to make extra money. I remember how she would go to restaurant and would order food and try to deconstruct the ingredients. I find myself doing that all the time and it makes my wife laugh hysterically. My wife, kids and I cook nearly every night together. I even let my kids use knives to cut the vegetables--they have to learn somehow and yes, I do keep band aids nearby. My kids will eat everything they make with us and we are very proud that they are so experienced with various cuisines. We have a large map of the world near the kitchen and whenever we cook a dish from a foreign land we will show them on the map where the country is located. They love it.

Why I am a Mormon

I remember when I was a senior in high school and decided that I needed to study the Book of Mormon. I decided that since I have started it so many times before from the beginning that I should start it in the middle this time. It worked. I read the Book of Mormon and learned of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I prayed about everything I read and it simply has always felt right. I served a mission in South America which gave me an opportunity to share the gospel with others. I met wonderful people and had tremendous experiences helping others who were searching for guidance in their life and who wanted to learn of modern day prophets. There are so many people who want to honestly follow God but just find themselves confused. I believe we can all find the answers through prayer. I come from a family with four brothers and two sisters. Growing up in Texas there were not that many Mormons where we were. Most of my friends were not Mormon but they respected me as the guy who did not drink and who stood by his beliefs. My family prays together each day so we can thank our Father for all that He has given us and to strengthen our family. I know that families need to be strong in order to overcome the many obstacles that occur. I know that I need the strength of my family and God in order to do this.

How I live my faith

I teach a 90-minute religious class to college age students each week. I have done it for ten years now and love the opportunity that I have to be a part of the teaching process for young men and women who are just getting out of high school and are trying to make tough decisions. They want to do what they feel is right but sometimes they lack the understanding of how to do it. Some are inexperienced with praying and actually getting answers. I show them how to ask and listen and then act on the answers they feel they receive. It is not always an exact science but they begin see the hand of God in their lives and begin to listen more intently. They begin to grow closer to God and they change. It is a wonderful thing to see young people make the decision to follow God and seek to know His will. I help people. Just recently a woman at work had a flat tire. I am her home teacher which means I am responsible for her family and their welfare. I visit her family in their home each month and share a short spiritual message and then always ask what I can do for them. Well, she had a flat tire and needed help. I had some coworkers who wanted to help so we all went out and helped change the flat tire. It is not the biggest deal in the world but it is something that we do as home teachers. Every member of the Mormon Church has a Home Teacher. We really feel God has called us to help others and we actively do so. I read the scriptures every day. I find immense power in the scriptures and what they contain. I would be lost without them. I need the influence of them each day.

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Blake
Yes, we do believe that God has a prophet on the earth today. Just like in times of old He chooses prophets to lead and guide his people. God called prophets then and since God does not change he continues to call prophets today. I invite you to see what they have to say to us today. Show more Show less
