Hi I'm Joel

I'm a doctor, I love my family, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I live in Ohio with my wife, my son, and my daughter. I am a pediatric resident--a pediatrician-in-training--and I love my job. I enjoy reading, watching movies with my wife and a bowl of ice cream, and playing sports. I am also a huge Boston Red Sox fan; after all, I was born and grew up in Maine, and all of New England is Red Sox country.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised as a Mormon, so for me, it is "Why I am still a Mormon." For me, it comes down to my understanding of who God is and what my relationship to Him is. I know in my heart that God is truly my Father in Heaven and that I am His son. Everything else is an extension of that faith. Because I know He is my Father, I know that He has a plan for me to be happy here and now and then to return to live with him after this life. Because He is my Father, He knows I will make mistakes while I am here, so He sent His Son, Jesus Christ. I know I can never return to Him without following the example of and relying on the mercy of Christ. Because He is my Father, He wants me to know about Him, about Jesus Christ, and about His plan for each of us. Thus, I know that He has provided prophets who have first hand experiences with Him and then tell us what we need to do to return to be happy now and return to him after this life. A Prophet today, President Thomas S. Monson, continues to teach us what we need to know and do in our day and with our current challenges. Because He is my Father and knows me perfectly, He knows I cannot make it in this life alone, so He has restored His church to the earth--the same church that Jesus Christ established when He was on the earth--to offer me support, fellowship, increased faith, and opportunities to serve. Jesus Christ leads this church--the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--today through the Prophet. Most importantly, because He is my Father, He knows that Heaven would not be Heaven if I were not with my family. So He has provided the power to make it so my family can be with me "for time and all eternity," not just "until death do you part" through holy temples. Since I know that God answers my prayers, I have asked Him if these things are true, and through the Holy Ghost, He has told me that they are indeed true. Because they make me so happy, I want to share them with everyone I know.

How I live my faith

Living my faith starts at home, where I try to show my love and support for my wife and to help raise my son with love and kindness. I try to reach out to my neighbors by serving them and setting an example of a follower of Christ. In my local congregation, called a "ward," I have had the opportunity at different times to lead the ward choir, to teach the children in Sunday School, and to serve as a local missionary. I have also been able to serve as a home teacher, which means that a friend and I visit a couple of different families in the ward every month to get to know them better and to help strengthen them in their efforts to follow Christ.
