Hi I'm Bill

I was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada and am a retired school teacher and principal. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I recently retired after working in elementary and junior high schools for 30 years. I am married to a wonderful woman (Margaret), have four awesome married step-children and six incredibly smart and cute grandchildren, with numbers 7 and 8 arriving in July of 2016. I have lived in Spruce Grove since marrying Margaret in 2010. I love to golf and read in my rather limited spare time. I am an avid hockey fan and the Detroit Red Wings, along with the hometown Oilers are the teams I cheer for. I spend a lot of my time immersed in the work of the Lord.

Why I am a Mormon

For years I knew that my life was missing something but things came to a head for me when I was diagnosed with a liver disease and found myself in a doctor’s office discussing survival rates on the day after my 50th birthday. Now I not only knew something was missing but that I had to take action on it. By 2008 I decided that now was the time to start thinking seriously about how I was going to take care of my long ignored spiritual needs. Flash forward a Thursday afternoon in early January, 2009. My cell phone rings and it is a friend who is a member of the Mormon Church telling me there was something that I "HAD" to see. Four hours later and I’m parking my car and gathering my wits before I go in. I’m scared because I have no idea what to expect. A video starts and I’m immediately mesmerized by what I see on the screen. I am so swept up by the emotions racing through every last cell of my body that I find myself praying, I mean really praying for what may be the first time in my life. I simply ask Heavenly Father if I am on the right path and that is when it happens; I am instantly overcome by the most intense physical and emotional sensations that I have ever experienced. There will never be any question in my mind of what His answer was! Once I was at home, I phoned my friend as promised and told her of my experience. I am sure that she was pleased, but it was a relatively short phone call and I had so much to ponder. So I headed to church at 9:00 on Sunday morning. What I didn’t know was that the missionaries would be looking for me. Apparently they had been told to keep an eye out for an older gentleman who looked out of place and I was the only one who seemed to fit the bill! I soon found out that I was going to Sunday school and Priesthood after that. By noon I had my own copies of The Book of Mormon and Gospel Principles and an appointment to meet with the missionaries on Tuesday. I ended up being baptized on March 7, 2009.

How I live my faith

I have had several leadership positions since joining the church 7 years ago. My favourite positions having been working with young missionaries and our ward, working with young single adults, and assisting our bishop when we began a new ward (congregation). My wife and I also work in our local temple for one or two shifts per week. I really enjoy working on service projects with the church such as helping members and non-members move and community projects such as raising funds for our local food bank.
