Hi I'm Tim Overton

After a journey through many other Christian churches, I found the Savior in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

About Me

I'm Black. I'm White. I am a husband, father, brother, son, friend, attorney, sports fan and happy person. I love spending time with my wife and children. So much so, that I get up around 5:00 each morning and start working, so that I get home early enough that I can spend several hours of quality time with them each day. That is the best part of each day. I am a lawyer who practices civil litigation in Phoenix Arizona. I enjoy work, and spend lots of time and energy working, but work is not my life. I work to support my family life, and my family sustains me in work and in everything else I face. Life is good.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to bi-racial parents in Southern California. I grew up attending various churches, but never really believing in God enough to do what was right. I think I was a good Christian for a couple of hours each Sunday, but otherwise did whatever the world taught me to do. I wanted to believe in God, but I would not really commit. I prayed, I went to church, and that was about it. My dad is a preacher in the Baptist church. My mom is not much of a church goer, though she has attended various churches throughout her life. I wound up somewhere in between the two. At least, that's where I was when I first met Mormon friends. Good friends welcomed me into their homes, and that changed my life more than I knew was possible. Slowly, step by step, and one kind act after another, I gained faith in people. Those people had faith in God. They also had faith in themselves, and faith in me, which helped me develop faith in myself. They inspired me to want to change my life. For example, I did not grow up eating dinner around the dinner table with my family, or frequently sharing expressions of love. In fact, if you would have asked me at the time whether I wanted those things, I would have said no because I thought they were corny. It was not until I experienced dinner at some friends' houses with their families, where parents, children and siblings were interacting, that I felt something in my heart I could not explain, which taught me that sharing certain experiences with family members and close friends brings true joy. I made the decision then that I wanted love in my life, and that I would live in a way that allowed me to experience and share that love. Being a member of the Church and living the Savior's teachings help me live the life that brings me true joy. I am a Mormon because it has brought me happiness I did not know was out there. I am a Mormon because I know Jesus Christ lives, and I know he runs the Church.

How I live my faith

I try my best to follow the Savior at all times. I love my wife and children, and I do my best to serve them. I try to live my life in a way that invites people to want to learn more about the Savior. In the church, I work with people of all ages. I spend most of my time with the youth and the children. I have learned to appreciate the struggles I had to learn about God and also to come to know him. I am able to use those experiences almost weekly serving in the church.
